Chiropractic Care Can Help Get Your Back Ready for Summer

Do you have a long list of things you'd like to do this summer? If you're like most people, you may have been less active during the cold winter months. Unfortunately, jumping back into warm weather activities too quickly can increase your risk for back pain. Chiropractic care can help you prepare your body for your favorite activities.

Why Your Back Needs a Little Help in the Summer

Inactivity can cause a range of issues that affect back health including:

Stiff Muscles and Soft Tissues
Muscle Tightness
Muscle Imbalances
Poor Posture
Weak Core
Subluxations (Misaligned Vertebrae)

These issues might not be causing you any pain now, but could increase your risk for back pain if you suddenly increase your activity level. According to a meta-analysis and systematic review published in Health Promotion Perspectives in 2021, being sedentary was a considerable risk factor for low back back pain in adults and children.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Chiropractic care helps you get ready for summer by addressing underlying issues before they can cause back pain. Treatments help your back adapt to your more active lifestyle.

Benefits of chiropractic care include:

Better Spinal Alignment. Subluxations press on or strain muscles, ligaments, and nerves, causing back pain and limiting movement. Chiropractic adjustments realign your spine. Adjustments ease pain, reduce pressure on nerves and improve posture. Adjustments are painless and involve quick movements with the hands or a small device to realign the vertebrae.
Improved Flexibility and Range of Motion. Adjustments and soft tissue treatments, like massage, improve soft tissue and joint flexibility and range of motion. Both adjustments and massage are among the non-drug therapies recommended by the American College of Physicians for low back pain. Thanks to chiropractic care, you'll be able to bend to w**d the garden or twist to s**g a fly ball.
Less Pain. Do you notice momentary twinges of pain when you bend or twist? Twinges are warning signs and could mean you're at increased risk for a back injury. Your chiropractor addresses the cause of those twinges, whether they're caused by subluxations or tight back muscles. Thanks to your visits to the chiropractic office, you won't have to worry about being sidelined by back pain this season.
Reduced Tissue Tension. Have you noticed that your muscles feel a little tight when you move? Tight muscles or tissues are more likely to become strained or sprained during exercise. Chiropractic treatments loosen soft tissues and relieve muscle spasms and trigger points (knots in muscles).
Straighter Posture. Weekend movie marathons may be the ideal way to pass a cold, snowy weekend, but too much time sitting can lead to posture issues. Poor posture tightens muscles and tissues, which can pull vertebrae out of alignment and cause subluxations. Muscle tension and subluxations make it difficult to maintain good posture, which can lead to back issues. Chiropractic treatments improve spinal alignment, reduce soft tissue tension, and improve muscle imbalances. Once these problems are corrected, posture improves, and the risk of back injuries decreases.
Better Athletic Performance. It's difficult to excel at your favorite spring sport if your back hurts or your range of motion is restricted. Chiropractic care helps you perform at your best by addressing issues that could affect your performance. In fact, many professional sports teams rely on chiropractors to get their players game ready.

Is your back ready for summer? Start the process with a visit to the chiropractor. Contact our office to schedule your appointment.

How Treating Microtraumas with Chiropractic Care Can Help You Avoid Injuries

Aches and pains aren't always caused by dramatic injuries, like falls or car accidents. In some cases, pain occurs as a result of a series of microtraumas. Microtraumas, tiny injuries to the body's soft tissues, trigger pain and stiffness and may increase your risk for more serious injuries. Fortunately, chiropractic care can prevent microtraumas from becoming major problems.

What Are Microtraumas?

Microtraumas affect your tendons, ligaments, muscles, and the connective tissue that support your joints. The injuries are so small that you may not notice any symptoms at first.

When microtraumas occur, your body may make small changes to protect itself. You might alter the way you walk or change the way you hold your shoulder due to microtraumas in your back, neck, shoulder, hips, or legs. Even minor posture changes can affect spinal alignment, trigger inflammation, or irritate nerves.

Microtraumas may also create imbalances that increase your risk for injury. Imbalances happen when one group of muscles becomes too tight or strong, while another group becomes too loose or weak.

Reaching for an umbrella in the back seat of your car could strain or tear tight tissues in your shoulder due to a collection of microtraumas. Or, you might dash down the stairs the same way you do every morning and suddenly feel pain in your back or leg.

Muscles that are too tight can change the alignment of your spine, causing subluxations. Subluxations occur when the vertebrae in your spine aren't properly aligned. Subluxations cause pain and swelling and may affect flexibility and movement.

What Causes Microtraumas?

Microtraumas are overuse injuries that can be caused by:

Poor Sitting or Standing Posture
Bending Your Neck Down to View Digital Devices
Repetitive Movements, Like Typing, Hammering or Swinging a Racquet
Gait Imbalances That Affect the Way You Walk
Sleeping in Awkward Positions
Stress
Poor Form When Exercising

According to Science Direct, people often ignore small twinges that may occur with microtraumas. Although the body attempts to repair the damage, healing won't happen if poor posture continues or a muscle imbalances aren't corrected. Unfortunately, this means that tearing and tissue degeneration worsen until it becomes impossible to ignore pain or stiffness.

In addition to causing soft tissue injuries, like bursitis, tendinitis, and carpal tunnel syndrome, microtraumas may also be responsible for stress fractures. Stress fractures happen when the muscles tire and can't absorb shock properly. This stresses the bones and increases pressure on them. The pressure creates a small crack in the bone called a stress fracture.

How Do Chiropractors Treat Microtraumas

Treating microtraumas as they occur is the simplest way to avoid pain and mobility problems. Chiropractors use these therapies and treatments to manage microtraumas:

Manipulation. Spinal manipulation therapy, commonly called adjustments, improves the alignment of the vertebrae that make up the spine. Correcting subluxations eases pain, restores normal movements, and improves imbalances. Joint manipulation keeps the bones in a joint properly aligned and decreases pressure on surrounding soft tissues. If you notice that a joint doesn't move as easily as it once did, you may have a joint restriction caused by microtraumas. Manipulation offers a simple way to correct the issue and allow healing to begin.
Soft Tissue Therapies. Soft tissue therapies, including massage, soft tissue mobilization, and myofascial release, loosen tight muscles and soft tissues and break apart scar tissue that may form due to microtraumas. Scar tissue restricts joint movement and causes pain.

In addition to improving pain and ability, these therapies reduce inflammation and improve blood flow, ensuring that injured areas receive the nutrients and other substances needed for healing.

Your chiropractor may also recommend exercises that stretch and strengthen muscles and help you avoid imbalances. After evaluating your posture, your chiropractor may suggest changes that will reduce your risk of microtraumas. For example, your chiropractor may suggest taking frequent breaks when using digital devices and holding handheld devices at eye level to reduce strain on your neck, upper back, and shoulders.

Regular visits to the chiropractor help microtraumas heal and lower your risk for more serious injuries. Get in touch with our office to schedule an appointment with the chiropractor.

How Chiropractic Care May Improve Your Stress Level

Frequent stress is just as bad for your physical health as it is for your mental health. Chronic stress increases your risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, depression and other serious health conditions. Chiropractic care offers a natural way to manage stress.

The Effects of Stress

Do your neck and shoulder muscles feel sore and tight when you're stressed? Muscle tension isn't the only physical consequence of stress. Stress can also cause headaches and migraines, back pain, nausea, diarrhea, bloating, sleep issues, and temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ).

These symptoms occur when your body activates the "fight-or-flight" response. The response helps you react to a threatening situation, but also occurs if you're feeling stressed about a work situation or an argument with your partner. In addition to tensing your muscles, the fight-or-flight response raises your blood pressure and heart rate, slows digestion, and increases production of the stress hormone cortisol.

Less Stress with Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic treatments focus on improving musculoskeletal (bones and muscles) health and nervous system function. Small bones called vertebrae provide flexibility for the spine and protect the spinal cord, the connection between the brain and body. A network of nerves branches out from the spinal cord along the length of the spine.

Misaligned vertebrae (subluxations) and tight muscles and tissues press on nerves, irritating them. Irritation and pressure make it harder for the nervous system to do its job and may be contributing factors in stress.

Chiropractic adjustments realign the vertebrae, relieving pain and irritation. Spinal manipulation also balances the nervous system, according to a literature search published in Acta Biomedica in 2020.

Chiropractic treatment offers many stress-relieving benefits, including:

More Comfortable Muscles and Tissues. Adjustments correct subluxations and decrease stress on surrounding tissues. Massage and other soft tissue therapies loosen tight muscles and tissues, helping you feel more relaxed. As muscle tension eases, you may find your range of motion and overall comfort level increase. Do you struggle with migraines and tension headaches due to stress? These types of headaches are associated with tense neck muscles, according to the American Chiropractic Association. Adjustments to the vertebrae in your neck, in addition to massage, soft tissue mobilization, trigger point therapy, and other treatments, could relieve or reduce your stress-induced headaches.
Cortisol Reduction. Cortisol gives your body the energy it needs to handle difficult situations by increasing glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. Unfortunately, cortisol doesn't always drop after a stressful experience. If you often feel stressed, your cortisol level may remain high. Chiropractic treatments improve nervous system function, which could help your cortisol level return to normal. Treatments also eliminate nerve signal disruptions that could affect your ability to calm yourself.
Better Heart Rate Variability. Your high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) becomes lower when you feel stressed. Heart rate variability is the time between heartbeats. Massage increases HF-HRV while improving relaxation, according to a randomized, controlled trial published in Scientific Reports in 2020.
A Natural Calm. Do you wish there were a way to feel calmer without taking medication? During many chiropractic treatments, including adjustments and massage, your body releases serotonin and endorphins. These hormones relieve pain and improve mood naturally, helping you feel calm and relaxed.
Better Sleep. Stress worsens when you don't get a good night's sleep, yet it's hard to fall asleep when your muscles hurt, you have a headache, and you're worried about the day ahead. Chiropractic treatments promote good sleep by relieving pain and enhancing relaxation.

Are you concerned about your stress level? Chiropractic care offers an effective natural solution to stress. Contact our office to schedule an appointment with the chiropractor.

The Benefits of Chiropractic Care for All Ages

Chiropractic care provides important benefits at every stage of life. Whether you're dealing with a colicky baby, an aching back, or arthritis, chiropractic treatments are aimed at easing pain, improving comfort, and supporting wellness.

Chiropractic Care for Infants, Children, and Teens

The birthing process may disrupt the alignment of the spine and stress your baby's nervous system. Chiropractic treatments adjust the spine and calm the nervous system. Treatments can start soon after birth. Chiropractors use special, gentle techniques when working with infants and young children.

Looking for a solution to colic? Babies with colic are inconsolable and cry for hours every day, no matter what you do to try to soothe them. Luckily, chiropractic treatment could calm your colicky baby. Chiropractic treatment resulted in fewer daily hours of crying in five out of six colic research studies examined by Clinical Pediatrics in 2024.

Heavy backpacks worn by children and teens can cause subluxations (spinal misalignments), in addition to changes in posture and gait. According to a 2021 Open Sports Sciences Journal review article, carrying a heavy backpack can change the curvature of the spine, compress the rubbery disks between the vertebrae, and cause low back pain in adulthood.

Your chiropractor can adjust your child's spine to correct subluxations that cause pain and stiffness. Other helpful chiropractic treatments, like massage and ultrasound therapy, soothe and relax sore, tight muscles, and tissues.

Improving Comfort with Chiropractic Care During Adulthood

Sitting at a desk, commuting, lifting heavy objects, and performing repetitive movements can cause low back pain, one of the most common reasons people visit the chiropractic office. Chiropractic adjustments are among the back pain treatments recommended by the American College of Physicians and the World Health Organization.

Chiropractic care isn't just effective for back pain. Your chiropractor can help you manage many conditions and complaints, including:

Bulging Discs
Digestive Issues
Bursitis
Golf or Tennis Elbow
Scoliosis
Plantar Fasciitis
Sciatica
Neck, Hip, Knee and Shoulder Pain
Headaches and Migraines
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMD)
Fibromyalgia
Muscle Spasms
Trigger Points

Do you experience neck pain, headaches, muscle spasms, or tingling and numbness in your arms and hands when using your smartphone, tablet, or other digital device? You may have text neck, a condition caused by the excessive pressure placed on the neck when looking down at a digital device. Chiropractic adjustments improve spinal alignment, while soft tissue treatments relax tight muscles and tissues in the neck, shoulders, and upper back. Treating text neck is particularly important, as the condition may eventually damage the spine in some cases.

Chiropractic care can be helpful for athletes of all ages. Treatments improve joint mobility, muscle balance, and circulation, help athletes recover from injuries faster, and reduce the risk of injuries caused by stiff joints and muscles or poor posture or balance.

Chiropractic Treatment for Senior Citizens

Losing your balance can lead to a devastating fall if you're a senior citizen. More than 14 million older Americans fall every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Thirty-seven percent of the falls require medical treatment or activity restrictions. Chiropractic treatment improves your balance by relaxing stiff muscles that prevent full range of motion and correcting joint and spinal misalignments.

Age-related wear and tear on joints and connective tissues may lead to pain, stiffness, and range-of-motion issues. Luckily, chiropractic treatment can help you stay active and maintain your independence. It offers an effective way to manage the symptoms of arthritis, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis and other degenerative conditions.

It's never too early or too late to receive chiropractic care! Contact our office to schedule your appointment.

Which Disc Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat?

Do you suffer from back or neck pain caused by a disc condition? A visit to the chiropractor can relieve pain, numbness, tingling, and other symptoms. Chiropractors use a variety of therapies designed to improve your comfort and ease of movement.

What Do Spinal Discs Do?

Rubbery discs cushion the space between individual vertebrae in the spine. The discs behave like shock absorbers and give your spine the flexibility it needs to move, twist, and bend. Discs consist of a soft, gel-like interior encased in a tougher outer covering.

Discs may become damaged due to injuries, stress, or wear and tear. Unfortunately, wear and tear is hard to avoid and is a natural part of aging. As you get older, the flexibility and water content of your spinal discs decreases, resulting in a thinner disc more prone to damage.

No matter what the cause of your disc condition, chiropractic treatments reduce pain, improve mobility, and may even help you avoid surgery.

Spinal Conditions Chiropractors Treat

Your chiropractor offers effective treatments for these disc conditions:

Herniated Discs. A herniated disc happens when the outer layer of a spinal disc ruptures and the interior material pushes through that tear. The protruding section of the disc presses on nerves, causing pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness. Disc herniations often affect the neck and lower back. Men between 20 and 50 are particularly at risk for herniated discs, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. Other risk factors include repetitive activities, being overweight, poor lifting technique, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and driving for long periods.
Bulging Discs. Bulging discs happen when the disc's inner core pushes against the outer layer without breaking through it. The bulging section of the disc increases pressure on nerve roots, causing stiffness and pain.
Degenerative Disc Disease. Age-related wear and tear is the cause of degenerative disc disease. Thinning discs lose their ability to adequately cushion the spine and could be the reason your back or neck is stiff and painful. Degenerative disc disease can affect flexibility and range of motion. Pain may be worse in certain positions, such as sitting or bending. Disc degeneration may begin as early as 40, although you might not feel any pain at this stage, according to the Arthritis Foundation.
Disc-Related Sciatica. Sciatica happens due to inflammation and irritation of the sciatic nerve that travels from the lower back to the foot. Bulging or herniated discs press on the nerve, causing pain. Although the problem disc may be in your lower back, pain radiates along the nerve path to your buttock, leg, or foot.

Treating Disc Conditions with Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors use several treatments to relieve symptoms of disc conditions, including:

Spinal Adjustment. Spinal adjustments restore misaligned vertebrae to their natural position. Adjustments improve mobility, ease pressure on nerves, and help decrease nerve irritation. Quick movements, produced by pressure from the hands or a small activator, realign the vertebrae.
Soft Tissue Therapy. Soft tissue therapies, like massage and soft tissue mobilization, reduce stiffness, ease muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote healing.
Flexion-Distraction. Flexion-distraction therapy uses gravity to improve spinal alignment and reduce pain. Your chiropractor gently adjusts your spine while you lie on a moving segmented table. The therapy repositions the bulging or herniated disc portion of the disc, reduces pressure on nerves, and improves circulation and mobility.
Spinal Decompression Therapy. Spinal decompression gently stretches the spine, which creates negative pressure inside the disc. The pressure difference helps herniated and bulging discs return to their normal positions, boosts circulation, and improves the flow of healing nutrients to the spine.
Exercises. Your chiropractor may recommend exercises to strengthen and loosen the muscles supporting the spine. These exercises improve joint stability, flexibility, and mobility, while reducing muscle tension.
Lifestyle Recommendations. If your habits or lifestyle are factors in your disc condition, your chiropractor may recommend making a few lifestyle changes. For example, improving your posture and taking frequent breaks during road trips could decrease pain and stiffness.

Ease your pain and stiffness with chiropractic care. Contact our office to schedule an appointment with the chiropractor.

How to Choose the Best Chiropractor for Your Needs

Are you tempted to choose a name at random when searching for a chiropractor? Although that method may be quick, it won't guarantee you'll find a chiropractor who's best-suited to treat your condition. Before you make an appointment, follow these tips:

Read Referrals

About 70,000 chiropractors practice in the U.S., according to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), which makes narrowing down your choices understandably difficult. Luckily, Google, Yelp, and other review sites offer valuable information regarding chiropractic offices.

Pay particular attention to reviews that mention your specific problem. If you're suffering from neck pain after a car accident, multiple reviews that mention successful whiplash treatment may mean that chiropractor is a good choice for you.

Consider the details if you notice any negative reviews. Complaints about the magazine or music selection in the waiting room obviously aren't as important as issues with the chiropractor's bedside manner or treatment results.

Ask your doctor or friends and family members for referrals. People you know can be good referral sources and may provide valuable information on a chiropractor's services, ease in making appointments, parking availability, and friendliness of the office staff.

If you need a little help finding a chiropractor, visit the "Find a Doctor" page on the ACA's website. Simply enter your zip code to retrieve a list of chiropractors in your area.

Take a Look at the Website's "About Us" Section

Most chiropractic websites provide information about the chiropractor's education and experience, in sections like "About Us" or "Meet the Team." Make sure a chiropractor you are considering graduated from an accredited chiropractic college and is licensed by your state's board of chiropractic examiners.

These sections may also mention particular areas of interest or special training or certifications. For example, a chiropractor may have furthered his or her education in sports medicine and passed a board exam offered by the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians.

Prioritize Accessibility

Before you make an appointment, consider these questions:

Does the chiropractor offer hours that fit your schedule?
How many days per week is the office open?
Can you reach the office using public transportation, if needed?
Is the office handicap accessible?
Does the chiropractor accept your insurance?

What Types of Treatments and Services Are Offered?

Chiropractors offer a variety of services, including:

Spinal Manipulation (Adjustments) to Realign Vertebrae
Soft Tissue Therapies to Ease Muscle Tension, Knots, and Spasms
Flexion-Distraction Therapy to Relieve Pressure on Discs and Nerves in the Spine
Ultrasound Therapy to Ease Pain and Promote Healing in Deep Tissues
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to Relieve Pain with a Gentle Electrical Current

Spinal manipulation, one of the most common treatments chiropractors use, offers effective relief of back and neck pain, according to several research studies. In 2023, researchers published a comparison of the effectiveness of spinal manipulation and conservative therapy in the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine. They concluded that chiropractic treatment seemed to be more effective than conservative care in reducing pain, increasing range of motion, and improving disability.

Are you experiencing pain due to arthritis, a sports injury, sciatica, herniated discs, or another painful condition? Check the website to ensure your chiropractor treats these issues. The chiropractor's website may include a section about the conditions treated, or you may need to call to determine if a particular chiropractor is experienced in treating your problem.

Visit the Office

Reviews, family referrals, and websites offer basic information, but there's no substitute for visiting the chiropractic office and meeting the chiropractor and staff. During your visit, pay attention to your surroundings. Is everything clean and comfortable? Does the office provide private exam and treatment rooms? Is the chiropractor willing to work with you to develop a treatment plan? Does the chiropractor clearly describe treatment options? Do you understand how much you'll pay for each visit? Are the chiropractor and staff friendly and empathetic?

Looking for a chiropractor who is responsive to your needs? We're here to help you manage your pain and improve your health. Contact our office to schedule an appointment.
