Lawmakers are considering HB4951, which adds a 24% wholesale tax on the plant. Stacked on top of the existing 10% excise tax and 6% sales tax, that’s nearly 40% total, making it taxed 850% higher than liquor in Michigan.
Here’s what that means for all of us:
- Prices jump 30–40% overnight, driving people back to the illicit market.
- Independents, microbusinesses, and equity operators won’t survive under that burden, leaving fewer choices and higher prices.
- Thousands of Michigan jobs across cultivation, retail, processing, and logistics are at risk.
