Stay Cool, Breathe Easy: Navigating Summer Heat with Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Summer is in full swing, and while the warm weather can be a welcome change, the heat and humidity can pose unique challenges for those with chronic lung conditions. We want to remind our pulmonary rehabilitation community of some key strategies to stay safe, active, and breathing well all season long.

Why is summer heat a concern?

Increased Oxygen Demand: When it's hot, your body works harder to stay cool, which requires more oxygen. For those with lung disease, this can lead to breathlessness. and fatigue.
Air Quality: High temperatures can lead to increased air pollution, smog, and allergens, which can all irritate the lungs and trigger symptoms.
Humidity: Humid air can feel thick and heavy, making it more difficult to breathe and potentially leading to airway constriction.

Tips for a Healthy Summer:

Prioritize Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don't feel thirsty. Staying hydrated helps thin mucus in your lungs, making it easier to breathe.

Time Your Activities: Plan your outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day—early morning or late evening.

Embrace Indoor Exercise: Don't let the heat stop your progress! Continue your pulmonary rehabilitation exercises indoors in a cool, well-ventilated space. Consider activities like:
Walking on a treadmill or in an air-conditioned mall.
Seated strength training with light weights or resistance bands.
Mindful breathing exercises like pursed-lip breathing or diaphragmatic breathing.
Indoor cycling.

Stay Cool at Home: Keep your home a comfortable temperature. Use air conditioning or fans to circulate air, but remember to keep fans clean to avoid blowing dust.

Listen to Your Body: Pay close attention to how you're feeling. If you experience increased shortness of breath, dizziness, or chest tightness, stop what you're doing, rest in a cool place, and use your rescue medication as needed. It's better to take a break than to push through and risk a flare-up.

By following these simple tips, you can continue to enjoy the benefits of your pulmonary rehabilitation program and have a safe, healthy, and happy summer.

Heads up: Covid cases have been on the uptick!

The latest strain's symptoms mimic the common cold - headache, sore throat, and nasal congestion.

Reduce your risk by steering clear of large crowds and people who are sick. And remember, hand hygiene is crucial! Wash those hands for at least 20 seconds - the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday or Twinkle Twinkle Little Star 🌟

If soap and water aren't available dont forget hand sanitizer is a good alternative!

Well said Dr. Kirk ❤️! Remember your allergy meds are prophylactic and should be taken on a routine basis not just when symptoms occur!

COPD patients use those Incentive Spirometers and keep the "junk" moving, Drink plenty of fluids (primarily water), and use cough techniques like "huff coughing" to mobilize secretions and keep air ways clear.

Welp, y’all, the battle is on. At the time I pen this, my community has found life after the devastation of Hurricane Helene and the results of storm damage. The trucks that pick up our debris have now dwindled to a diminished detachment and most have turned to a simple solution for their scrap and sweepings: Burning.
So here we are, in an already scheduled storm of spring pollen, only to be exacerbated by smoke and particles in every outdoor breath we take. Yay. You’d think a guy like me, that runs a walk-in sick clinic would be happy. My kids will get the LARGE fries this month, no doubt, but no - I’m filled with dread just like y’all. Why? Because the cure for cough is like Bigfoot, there’s evidence that such a thing exists, but as I get older, I’m starting to doubt it. (and his beef jerky is expensive, y’all!).
In previous Medical Minutes, we’ve discussed the importance of a cough and how trying to stop yours and your child’s cough is sometimes DANGEROUS. We shouldn’t fight a process that’s keeping junk from settling in your lungs, rather we should be trying to stop the CAUSE of a cough. What is the irritant that is making us make junk, right? Well, we can’t stop folks from burning. And we can’t stop plants from pollenating. Hence, the battle is on.
I’ve lovingly fussed in the past on how you should be taking your allergy meds WELL BEFORE getting sick, because that is how those medicines work. But y’all don’t listen. And just like my children, I still love y’all despite wanting to strangle you. So, let’s again just make a plan that’s “Dr. Kirk Simple.” I’ve been told that’s why y’all read these things anyway, so I’m gonna lean into it.
Your job: keep junk moving. Hack it up. Hock it up. BLOW your nose, don’t sniff it back in all day. Junk that doesn’t move, gets infected. There’s not more simple science than that. And yes, mucolytics like Mucinex helps junk to move (as does drinking more water, but Imma pick my battles today).
My job: help you figure out how to stop making junk in the first place. Between pre-emptive allergy meds that at least help SOME, to planned avoidance of the worst atmospheres, to even mask wearing! I know for a fact y’all still got masks in a drawer somewhere from COVID times. Break em out. Sorting out your medical regimen is as unique as the snowflake God made you into. There’s no magic cough medicine that works for everyone. We gotta sort it out. Together. I’m ready. Are you? This pollen/burning debris season is about to be a bo**er (phrasing intended). Buy me some beef jerky and let’s get in the fight.
Yours in Health and Christ, Dr. Kirk
