Look up tonight and witness May’s Full Moon in all its glory — known as the Flower Moon, a name given by Native American tribes to mark the blooming of wildflowers across the Northern Hemisphere.

It will be a micromoon, meaning the Moon will reach its full phase around its apogee, the farthest point in its orbit around the Earth.

📍 Peak illumination: May 12, around 16:55 UTC
🧭 Look toward the southeast as the Moon rises
🌸 Fun fact: It’s called the “Flower Moon” because it coincides with the peak of spring blossoms.

Get ready, a Flower Full Moon is rising – and it’s showing up with a micro-surprise 🌸

Mark your calendars: Monday, May 12 brings the Full Flower Moon, reaching peak illumination at 12:56 p.m. EDT. While you won’t see petals in the sky, this moon gets its name from the season’s explosion of blooming flowers – a tribute to spring’s full arrival.

Despite peaking during daylight hours, you’ll still be able to catch a stunning moonrise later that evening. Just after sunset, look toward the eastern horizon. If conditions are clear, you might even catch the moon with a soft yellow or coral glow as its light scattered and filtered by Earth’s atmosphere.

This year’s Flower Moon will be a micromoon, appearing slightly smaller and dimmer than usual since it’s at its farthest point from Earth.

But don’t let that fool you. Its beauty remains unmistakable. And if you look closely, you may notice a companion star twinkling nearby: Antares, the red heart of the Scorpius constellation.

In folklore, this moon signaled planting season and the return of fertile Earth. The Cree called it the Budding Moon or the Egg Laying Moon. Others knew it as the Frog Moon, as ponds came alive with croaks once again.

So whether you’re a gardener, stargazer, or moonchild at heart, step outside Monday night and let the Flower Moon remind you that spring is in full swing.
