I am beyond saddened to announce the closing of Wilson Drug. Making this announcement is something I have agonized over, prayed over, and discussed over with anyone that has been in my shoes or I thought could offer wisdom or guidance.
Wilson’s last day of operation will be January 5, 2024. At that time all the pharmacy files will transfer to Duffey Drug in Franklin. We will continue to provide service to our Wilson Drug cutomers with as seemless a transition as possible.
I am so proud of the tradition of quality pharmaceutical care, wonderful customer service and love for the community that started way back in 1954. Leon Wilson and Steve and Cathy Lazarus passed down a legacy I have tried to uphold for 16 years. I am grateful for their vision and love for Hearne and the surrounding communities. The citizens of Hearne and our patients and customers have given me immense joy, both personally and professionally.
I would have loved nothing more than to keep up the level of service for many more years. But so many factors are fighting against independent pharmacy owners in this day and age. Poor reimbursement (many times lower than the cost of the drug), DIR fees, and rising overhead costs have contributed to this action. Independent pharmacy isn’t long for this world unless some real changes are made that allow a small business to play on the same (and level) field that the big box pharmacies play on.
2023 will go down as one of the worst years in my life. I have called Wilson Drug “my first love” and this store, this community, and you, our customer, will be in my heart forever.
