Officials warn against supplement sold in stores after 3 overdose deaths

Health officials in California issued a public warning about an energy product sold at convenience stores and smoke shops after three people died of overdoses in the Los Angeles area.

The products, sold online and at convenience stores and smoke shops in the form of tablets, gummies and drink mixes, contain the compound kratom, which medical experts say can be addictive and often carries toxic consequences.

High doses of 7-OH alone, or those mixed with alcohol or other sedatives, can cause "severe respiratory depression and death," Los Angeles County health officials wrote. "Again, they are unregulated and may contain unknown concentrations of 7-OH, increasing the risk of unintentional overdose."

Cannabis is largely unstudied or has failed rigorous medication trials, so its impact on mental health is mostly unknown. However, new findings indicate distressing results, causing experts to call for a reassessment of the risks and benefits of cannabis, as nearly 30% of users develop cannabis use disorder (CUD). For adolescent users, risks for addiction are twice that of adults, and after four years, 1 in 5 adolescents develop problematic use. Disturbingly, new studies suggest elevated cannabis risks for depression and suicidal thoughts and behaviors, especially in adolescents and young adults.

It is back to school time again. Here are some safety tips for this new school year.

Tips for a strong start to the school year! Get enough sleep. Aim for 8-10 hours per night. Move more and sit less. Eat healthy foods and do not v**e or smoke. Try to be physically active each day. Take breaks from electronics and social media. Try to turn of screens while doing homework or with friends and family. Best of luck to all students during this new school year. Please be prepared to stop for buses picking up or dropping off students.

Send a clear message that underage drinking is not allowed and that it can lead to serious consequences.
Be approachable so your child can come to you with questions.
Keep conversations light by avoiding scare tactics and lectures.
Provide tools so your child can learn how to refuse alcohol, avoid peer pressure, and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
Make sure there’s no alcohol at your child’s social gatherings.

Lung Cancer Diagnosis Comes 2.8 Years Sooner for Smokers of Both To***co and Ma*****na

A study from researchers at the Creighton University School of Medicine found that lung cancer patients who smoked ma*****na and to***co were diagnosed with the condition 2.8 years earlier than those who smoked to***co but not ma*****na. A preprint of the results explained that “these findings signal a potential synergistic carcinogenic effect of to***co and ma*****na smoke and warrant further exploration into the role that ma*****na plays in cancer progression.”
