1 in 4 children in the US. - 10% to 15% of the world's children – live with at least one parent with a substance use disorder (SUD).
While some can find a supportive adult who helps protect them from the worst, others suffer in isolation. They often believe it is their fault, and they are responsible to “fix” the person and save their families. All children deserve the hope and healing that can transform their lives.

The brain's infrastructure and default settings develop, changes, and organizes into the thirties.

Researchers identified epochs of structural brain development, with the critical period from 9-32 years old.

Early substance abuse may alter the brain's developmental trajectory, forever changing reward circuits.

Early substance use—nicotine, alcohol, or cannabis (or other addicting drugs)—interferes with critical maturation stages, particularly adolescence.

New Year's safety tips for a responsible and fun celebration

Offer plenty of nonalcoholic drinks and keep fireworks well away from the house. Most mishaps come from icy steps, crowded rooms, or a rushed decision at the end of the night, so a few steady habits go a long way.

Always designate a sober driver, or if nowhere else, call a taxi or Uber or stay over at where you are celebrating. If you have had too much to drink-don't get behind the wheel. Remember never to furnish alcohol to minors.

New Year's Eve is always busy on the roads. Take longer to get where you're going and drive defensively. Plan ahead and have a designated driver or other safe transportation plan so you don't take the risk.

Enjoy your new year's celebration and stay safe. Happy 2026!

Prevention & Early Action

The teen and young adult years are confusing, complicated and formative. Understanding what’s happening socially and developmentally — and how it can intersect with substance use — is fundamental to setting the stage for healthier outcomes.
