Hey, I finally have the whole set! It’s like how we used to collect glasses or toys from restaurants. 🤣 Adding CAPPA Lactation Educator training to my skillset will bring even more support and knowledge to my clients who get continually nothing but the latest and best!

So excited about this training in the breathtaking Summit Ridge Bodywork classroom in Santaquin. The Central Utah area has a high demand for doula work but a low number of available doulas ready to be hired! Of course, students from all areas are welcome. You've probably heard of labor and postpartum doula support but did you know there are many types of doula work? These services are provided by those with extra skills.

Bereavement doulas never want to be needed but are ready to serve when they are. They support families through the unexpected, a variety of types of grief, including loss of a baby. For additional info, there are also end-of-life doulas for those outside of the baby-age, but those services aren't part of the doulaed skills.

Virtual doulas know how to communicate well through several methods including video chat, text, email, and phone. They are typically available on-call for virtual help during labor for those in remote areas where there is no doulas available, or for those that desire the help without a physical doula present.

Sibling doulas are ready to help your little ones understand the changes the family is going through, things they can do to help, things to not do, and then incorporate the siblings into the birth of your new baby whether at home or at a birth center. They know how to calmly es**rt kids out of the room if things get too tense, and keep the involvement age-appropriate.

Adoption/Surrogacy doulas have experience in these tender scenarios where additional people are involved and the dynamics are not quite the same.

I bet you’ve heard of informed consent, but have you heard of informed decision making? What’s the difference and why does it matter?

Informed obviously means you have all the details. Did you know to be TRULY informed you have to be given all of the following: risks, benefits, reason it’s being suggested, what alternatives there are, whether this is experimental, and if it is being expected as a standard protocol or something specific to your care.

Consent implies a passive acceptance of what someone else has said they want you to do. Decision making informs people that you are actively weighing your options from all sources and will make the choice that works for you. Using this term with your care providers helps them understand you are the decider.

Client after client after client. All getting pressured to start getting cervical checks at 36-37 weeks, pressured to induce or “their baby could die,” told their body isn't doing anything to go into labor on its own and it needs help. The word “due” and the claim “past due” makes women feel like they have somehow failed to accomplish a basic function they were made to do. With fear instilled in them about the safety of their baby, they cave on the induction and are left with trauma. If a woman CHOOSES an induction and after being given proper informed decision-making opportunities, decides it is best for her, we fully support that. But coercion isn’t choice. Say no if it doesn’t feel right.

With every choice you make, consider if you are helping someone else shine or blocking their light, and try to remember that standing among other lights makes you look brighter, not diminished. We have a duty to IGNITE the fire in each other and RADIATE love into the world. We owe it to ourselves, we owe it to the mothers, we owe it to the generation of children currently being raised by women with unprecedented amounts of stress, doubt, fear, loneliness, shame, and pure exhaustion. We can do better, we need to. Be a light.
