Kindness looks like remembering a child’s favorite show when they come in for a visit. 📺 It looks like families asking, “Where’s Hannah?” because they feel safe with her.

When we asked staff to share moments of kindness at Shodair, this story about Hannah, our outpatient receptionist in our Medical Office Building, stood out immediately. 💛

"She goes above and beyond to make them feel comfortable, valued, and cared for, and her presence makes a noticeable difference every single day."

What’s it like to be a child on a residential psychiatric unit?

Our very own CEO, Craig Aasved, found out firsthand, spending a night as a patient. He gave up his personal belongings, followed the same routines as the kids, and experienced the hospital from their perspective with no special treatment.

“I wanted to experience what it’s like for patients,” Craig said. “To be checked for contraband, to see what meals are like, even to use the special bendy pencils. I wanted no special treatment.”

It’s rare for a hospital leader to step into this kind of experience, but Craig has always been committed to seeing Shodair from every perspective and being hands-on in understanding the needs of the kids we serve. The overnight stay gave him unique insight into the challenges and triumphs of children receiving care, and reinforced the importance of empathy, presence, and patient-centered leadership at Shodair.

Meet Luke 💛

From the moment he was born, Luke’s mom knew he was extraordinary. His journey is one of curiosity, courage, and hope. Years of searching for answers led them to Shodair Children’s Hospital, where our dedicated genetics team uncovered a rare mutation, one of the first in the country. This gave Luke and his family clarity, connection, and life-changing resources.

Today, Luke is thriving. Despite physical challenges, he shines in the Special Olympics with his boundless enthusiasm and contagious “permagrin.”
