Fun tomato fact for a Monday! Did you know that we use electric toothbrushes as an important tool in our pollination process? Pollination for tomatoes takes place when the "anther" portion of the plant drops pollen onto the "stigma" portion of the plant. Typically this occurs when bees, wind, or other critters wiggle the plants. At West Mont, our clients move through the greenhouses with electric toothbrushes to help to shake the "anther" portion and assist our tomato plants in the pollination process.

Our Farm Vocational Program has been working hard since February to grow some incredible Big Beef tomato plants. Want a chance to grow tomatoes this summer? We will be selling potted tomato plants from our Farm this Saturday at the Downtown Helena Farmer's Market from 9am to 1pm on Fuller Ave!

West Mont Farm & Gardens is located on 34 acres in the Helena valley. In addition to be a licensed group home for 8 people with disabilities, the Farm provides vocational and employment opportunities for 24-people. The Farm is also a community attraction. Thousands of people have toured its greenhouse operations and petting zoo. The group home was built in 1989 by volunteers on land that was donated.
In October 2019, West Mont completed major renovations and upgrades to the group home. The goal of this project was to improve the home’s safety and functionality, and to ensure that it is fully ADA accessible. Changes included:
Plumbing, electrical, and mechanical upgrades
The home needs was brought up to current Building Code Standards
An additional bedroom built so each of the 8 residents can have their own room.
The living room and exercise room expanded to comfortably enable all residents to use these rooms at the same time.
DA Interior/exterior wide doors installed
The kitchen was remodeled to provide a more functional flow
A separate office, craft/break room, medicine room were
New laundry room, new deck, new wood ramp, sidewalk, and covered parking were added.
Thanks to the generosity of so many, we were able to to all of the renovations that the home needed. Phase II of the Farm project will be major updates to the grounds including Morgan’s Maze, an Interpretive Path, and gardens. We are looking to break ground in 2020.
