Feathered Pipe

Feathered Pipe ~ America's finest health, wellness and yoga retreats and travel ~ Carlos Nakai – to name only a few – are honored alumni of the Feathered Pipe.

The Feathered Pipe Ranch is one of the country’s premier yoga and conscious living retreat centers. Tucked in the heart of the Montana Rockies and surrounded by miles of forested mountains, it is a vibrant and peaceful oasis to which our guests return eagerly year after year – inevitably leaving the Ranch feeling recharged and relaxed – and counting the days until they can again return. The Ranch

has been home to yoga and meditation retreats and a host of other personal growth programs since 1975, helping people experience our wholeness and remember our intimate connection to all of life. Many of today’s foremost voices on yoga, meditation, wellness and health have come through our doors at one time or another, with many of them getting their start as a student through our scholarship fund. Joseph Campbell, Dr. Andrew Weil, Lilias Folan, Angela Farmer, Rodney Yee, Patricia Walden, Erich Schiffmann, Judith Hanson Lasater, Seane Corn, and world-renowned Native American flutists, R. The Ranch is nestled amidst almost a million acres of national forestland and offers an ideal setting for true retreat experience, allowing the space within and without to experience the essence of one’s self and nature. Visitors can wander alone exploring ambling brooks fed by pure mountain springs and discover open vistas to view the world below and the Big Sky above. Ranch retreat visitors can just as easily find community with others, sitting on the open lawn in the shade of cottonwood trees, quaking aspens, and fragrant pine with an exquisite view out over the lake with Lake Tipi and mountain woodlands reflected. Horseback riding is available for those wishing to view the world from a truly Montanan point of view.

The reason I was able to reframe the energy problem was there was no place you could study it. And I didn’t know that much about it, so I had nothing to unlearn. Therefore, I was able to practice, and I’ve cultivated ever since, what in Eastern tradition is called Beginner’s Mind, Original Mind, Child’s Mind—where you let go of all assumptions and preconceptions, and therefore can take a completely fresh view. In those days, for example, the energy problem was thought to be, “Where do we get more energy? More of any kind from any source at any price.” I started, instead, at the other end by asking, “What do you want energy for?”

Physicist Amory Lovins is Cofounder and Chairman Emeritus of Rocky Mountain Institute, an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit organization working to transform the global energy system to secure a clean, prosperous, zero-carbon future.

“And what you do is you just start flipping and taking what you’re given and start to work with it. In other words, your karma defines your dharma. That means what you got is what you work with. I mean, like, my baldness is my karma. I mean, it’s my genetics, it’s everything. Now, it becomes my dharma. Now, I can use it in order to become free of being bald, or being not bald, or whatever.” – Ram Dass

"Because our body is always in the present moment, we stop thinking when we anchor our mind in our body. You can pick where to anchor your awareness, such as in the flow of your breath or in what your hands are experiencing right now. When you’re showering, anchor in the sensation of the water hitting your skin. When you’re gardening, anchor in the feeling of your hands touching dirt, stems, leaves, roots.

When you’re driving, you can come back to the constantly changing vibrations of the tires as they ride along the road. Are you safer driving a car while thinking about problems at home, at work, or in the world, or are you safer if your mind is clear and your awareness wide?"

Jan Chozen Bays explores the essence of mindfulness—what it is, how to practice it, and the transformative power of unifying body, heart, and mind.

When we show up to our yoga mats, it is easy to feel the profound benefits from our practice. The more challenging task is to carry the insights gained on the mat with us into our hurried lives.

So often the rigor of our day to day schedules leaves us with little time to reflect on how we are spending our precious energy. For many of us it is hard to create space for this reflection but the clarity it brings is immeasurable.

On this retreat, set amidst Montana’s majestic Rocky mountains, we will practice daily vinyasa yoga, meditation, group inquiry, and additional workshops that support mindful living . Join for a week of rest, renewal, and exploration of what it means to "be here now."

"It is not strange that the sweetest moment in any life, pleasant or dreary, should be when Nature draws near to it, and, taking up her neglected instrument, plays a fragment of some ancient melody, long unheard on the earth… Nature has at times this peculiar effect on us, restoring instantaneously the old vanished harmony between organism and environment."

It must be encoded there, in the childhood memories of our synapses and our cells — how we came out of the ocean 35 trillion yesterdays ago, small and slippery, gills trembling with the shock…

"When we spread our awareness to the body parts that don’t seem to be crucial in any given pose, we discover how seemingly minor and usually forgotten alignment details can transform a pose, and—more crucially—can also transform your mental experience of that pose, that moment.

In this way, your yoga practice becomes a laboratory in which to practice reducing your reactivity. And with enough practice, your growing ability to be less reactive will spill over into the rest of your life."

Our minds have the tendency to be overly reactive, to zero in on what appears to be the most pressing thing at any given moment, to the exclusion of everything else.
