Marion Barnwell “Snookie” Lee, Jr., 86, husband of Nancy Lewis Lee, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025, at his home in Hemingway, South Carolina. His life was one marked by service—to family, students, town, state, church—and by an unwavering commitment to making things better wherever he could.

Born on September 10, 1939, in Florence, South Carolina, Snookie was a son of the late Marion B. Lee, Sr. and Charlotte Lee. He grew up in Hemingway and graduated from Hemingway High School before attending Presbyterian College. At Presbyterian College, he was not only a dedicated student but also a beloved member of the campus community—voted Most Popular by his classmates and serving as Business Manager of the college yearbook, the "Blue Hose."

Snookie began working at an early age in his family’s business, Hemingway Dry Cleaners. His passion for education soon led him into a distinguished career as a teacher, coach, and principal at both Hemingway High School and Hemingway Elementary School. Under his leadership, these schools achieved recognition for their high academic performance—a testament to his commitment to excellence in education.

His influence extended beyond the classroom. Snookie was appointed to the South Carolina State Board of Education and served on the Board of Trustees for Coastal Carolina University. After dedicating over three decades to education, he embarked on a new professional chapter by earning his Real Estate and Brokerage License.

A proud veteran of the United States Army, Snookie served as a Captain and Artillery Instructor at Fort Sill in Oklahoma for two years. His sense of duty continued throughout his life through extensive civic involvement. He was elected to the Hemingway Town Council where he served for more than twenty years. He also held positions on the South Carolina State Board of Agriculture and served as Chairman of the Department of Transportation for Williamsburg County.

Snookie’s love for his hometown was evident in all he did. He co-founded the South Carolina Bar-B-Que S**g Festival—an event that continues to bring joy and unity to the community each year.

A man deeply rooted in faith, Snookie was a lifelong member of Hemingway First Methodist Church where he served faithfully as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years.

Outside of his professional and civic commitments, Snookie found great joy in gardening. An avid cultivator of both vegetables and flowers, he took pride in nurturing life from soil to bloom—a reflection of how he nurtured those around him with care and intention.

Snookie is survived by daughters, Charlotte Sullivan, Margo Baghdady (Brian), and Rachel Loscalzo (Anthony); grandchildren Christopher Sullivan, Sean Sullivan, Jack Sullivan, Thomas Leonard, Helen Leonard, Matthew Baghdady (Sarah), Grace Baghdady, and Isabel Baghdady; brother Joe Lee (Linda); sister Earle Lee Bennett (Neyle); and many others who were touched by his wisdom and warmth.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 in the Garden of Devotion Cemetery located at 800 South Georgetown Highway, Johnsonville, South Carolina.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel, 416 N Main Street, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554.

08/16/2025

Katherine Josephine Cox Venters passed away peacefully on August 16, 2025 at her favorite vacation spot in Murrell’s Inlet surrounded by her family.

A daughter of the late Reverend Wilburn S. Cox and Effie Mae Stone Cox, Katherine was born on December 23, 1933 in Williamsburg County, South Carolina. As a young woman, she worked at Warner Bros Sewing Room, and then went on to own/operate Venters’ Grocery at Outland Crossroads in Hemingway, South Carolina. She became a pillar of the community, where she not only provided cold drinks and snacks to local farmers, but created a place where families in need knew they could come for help, or a welcoming place to just stop in and have a chat. In her later years, she was mostly a ‘MaMa’! She loved her family dearly and was always just a call away when any of them needed help. She was always there when a back needed to be scratched, socks needed darning, children were sick, younger generations needed the Farmer’s Almanac translated, canning advice was needed, family meals needed to be prepared, or entertaining stories of days gone by were requested by the grands! She was all of that and more!

Her resourcefulness, borne from growing up in the Depression era South, was something she instilled in her family. In addition, she instilled in them the ability to find joy and contentment in the simple things in life. She taught her family how to work for what they wanted and served as a living example. Many times she would ‘outwork’ the younger crew while gardening or weeding! She loved to fish and eat fried fish. She also enjoyed going on the bus trips with her friends, often boasting that she’d been to all 48 of the contiguous United States. She was always ready for a road trip or an adventure. She was an avid gardener and loved working in the yard. She enjoyed doing word find puzzles and crocheting afghans for her family as well as for those in the nursing homes. She possessed a rare silent strength that was beneficial to all with whom she came into contact. These traits were the reason her family affectionately nicknamed her the ’Rock’ of the family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman Mae Venters and her son, Norman Randall Venters. She is survived by her children Nell Harrell, Karen (Sherold) Owens, Teresa (Craig) Davis, and Melesa Bohanan and daughter-in-love Karen (Randy pre-deceased) Collins Venters. She had 9 grandchildren Andy Venters, Dreuh (Clint) Wilson, Kim (Alfie) Allen, Eddie (Megan) Owens, Andrew (Meredith) Owens, John Michael (Rachael) Davis, Alaina (Hunter) Thompson, Erikah (Corey) Davis, and Chantzler (Ally) Bohanan. She also had 10 great grandchildren: Norah Wilson, Drake Allen, Aria Allen, Anderson Owens, Emerson Owens, Aubrey Owens, Cullen Owens, Stella Thompson, Leira Thompson, Ezra Davis, Maya Davis, and Ava Davis. She is survived by her brother Jeremiah Livingston Cox and two sisters: Rebecca (Sambo) Evans and Lillian (Hank) McLaughlin. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who she enjoyed so much over the years.

Katherine’s life was defined by kindness and selflessness. She consistently cared for others, leaving a lasting impact on everyone she met.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18, 2025 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel, 416 N Main Street, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554. The service will be available on live-stream through the Morris Funeral Home page.
