✨ Milestone Monday: Functional Play ✨

Functional play is when a child uses toys the way they are meant to be used — like rolling a car, feeding a baby doll, stacking blocks, or pushing a train on a track. This skill typically begins around 12–15 months and continues to grow through the toddler years.

❓Why is functional play important?
Functional play builds the foundation for language development, problem-solving, attention, and early social skills. When children learn how objects work, they also learn important vocabulary (car, push, eat, sleep) and action words. It sets the stage for pretend play, following directions, and engaging with peers.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒 How to practice at home:
• Model how to use toys appropriately (show your child how to roll the car or brush the doll’s hair).
• Use simple language while playing: “Car go!” “Baby eat.”
• Play side-by-side and imitate your child’s actions.
• Offer a variety of toys (blocks, pretend food, animals, vehicles).
• Keep it simple — repeat the same play routine several times to build understanding.

Remember, play is learning! 💛 If you have concerns about your child’s play skills, early support can make a big difference

🎉Our next milestone - Responding to Name 🎉

This milestone means your child turns, looks, pauses, or otherwise acknowledges you when their name is called. This milestone often emerges around 6–9 months and becomes more consistent by 9–12 months.

❓Why it’s important:
Responding to their name is an early sign of:
- Listening and attention skills
- Social awareness
- Early receptive (understanding) language
- Readiness for following directions and learning words

🧑‍🧑‍🧒How to support it at home:
- Say your child’s name often during play and daily routines
- Get face-to-face before calling their name
- Use a happy, engaging tone
- Call their name, then immediately interact (smile, talk, play)
- Limit background noise when practicing (TV, music)
- Praise or respond right away when they look or turn

If your child doesn’t respond every time, that’s okay—consistency and repetition help build this skill over time.

🎉Welcome to our Milestone Monday segment! 🎉
For the month of February, we will be sharing a new milestone.

Today, we’re focusing on /k/ and /g/ sounds—also known as “back sounds” because they’re made with the back of the tongue lifting toward the soft palate.

❓Why this matters:
• Strong /k/ and /g/ production helps improve overall speech clarity and reduces fronting patterns (like saying “tat” for “cat”).
• By 3 years old, your child should have mastered these sounds.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒 Parent Tips to Practice at Home:
• Have your child lie on their back—this naturally helps the tongue move back
• Practice coughing or throat-clearing to feel where the sound is made
• Use mirrors so your child can watch mouth movements
• Start with isolation sounds (“k, k, k” or “g, g, g”), then move to syllables (key, cow, Kay, go, goo, gee). Once syllables are mastered, move to words!
• Keep practice short and fun—5 minutes at a time is plenty!

Great teamwork leads to great progress! 💙👏
