DID YOU KNOW...

Bunions can be caused by genetics, lifestyle or both! While your bunion won't go away on it's own, there are things you can do to help prevent it from getting bigger.

Bunions may develop when tight, narrow or pointy shoes are worn often. This puts extra pressure on the outside of the toe gradually pushing it inward. (This is most often seen in women due to stylish, high heel shoes) This leads to a painful bump on the outward edge of the foot that is called a BUNION!

What you can do to ease pain without surgery-

1. Wear wider shoes. Buy well-fitting footwear that’s wide in the toe area. Shop at a store where the staff measures your foot and can fit you with an appropriate shoe
2. Wear orthotics. Use shoe inserts to help position the foot correctly. These can be over-the-counter arch supports or prescription orthotic devices.
3.Stop going barefoot or wearing slippers around the house. When at home, you should wear sandals with an arch support to reduce pressure off of the bunion.
4. Wear a protective toe pad to alleviate pressure. Bunion pads can help redistribute pressure away from the affected joint.
5. Use a toe separator. The use of a toe separator between the big toe and 2nd toe will prevent them from butting against each other. While this can not reverse the formation of a bunion, it can reduce pain and pressure.
6. Modify your shoes. Dr. Fatkin has tools in office that can modify or stretch your shoes at the area of pain, relieving pressure from the bunion.
7. Prescription medications. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may be prescribed to help reduce inflammation.
