We cannot allow Black History Month to pass without honoring the life and legacy of Mary Davis Royster, the first Black female mortician in Vance County, North Carolina.
Mrs. Royster began her dedicated service to families during her time at the former Shepard Funeral Home in Oxford and Henderson alongside the late Mr. Richard Shepard. In 1991, through faith, resilience, and determination, she established her own funeral service, a legacy that continues to stand strong today by God’s grace.
Mrs. Royster believed in doing things God’s way and serving others in whatever capacity she could, whether the need was great or small. Her impact on the community is lasting, her contributions historic, and her presence deeply missed.
We honor her. We remember her. And we will never allow her history to go unspoken.
