Today's candidates come to us from one of our amazing Patient Relations Coordinators. Here is her submission:
"I would like to nominate my childhood friend and her son. Hearing loss runs deep in their family. She has worn hearing aids since she was a child, and now two of her three children also rely on them. Covering hearing aids for even one person can be a major financial burden; providing them for three is overwhelming. Yet this family continues to move forward with strength, faith, and humility. I have never once heard her complain.
My friend has not only lived with hearing loss her entire life, but she has progressively lost her sight due to Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). I cannot imagine the courage it takes to lose two of the five senses we so heavily depend on. Despite no longer being able to drive, she remains one of the most dedicated people I know, continually serving at her children's school and in her church community. She is also the most thoughtful person in our friend group. She always reaches out to each of us individually, checks in often, and never forgets important or special dates. Her ability to make others feel remembered and loved, even while navigating her own challenges, is one of the many reasons she is so deeply admired.
Her son with hearing loss is a high school senior, an incredible athlete, and a remarkable young man. Although he rarely talks about his hearing loss or admits that it affects him, I know it has been socially challenging for him in ways he doesn't express. Because of the anxiety surrounding his loss, he attends hybrid school, doing part at home and part at school, with his mom serving as his homeschool teacher. During football season, he would often sweat out his hearing aids during practice. Instead of drawing attention to himself, their family would return to the field later, sometimes with a metal detector, to search for them quietly so his peers wouldn't notice his struggle. His perseverance, resilience, and humility speak volumes.
This nomination is not made out of pity, but out of deep admiration and love for a family who faces their challenges with grace, faith, and determination. They live closest to the Layton office, and receiving support through this giveaway would be an incredible blessing to a family that gives so much, asks for little, and continues to show what real courage looks like."
Let's give this mother and her son a helping hand.
Many thanks to this Utah office for their willingness to help this family.
