🥦 Thiocyanates (isothiocyanates) are found in cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, bok choy, kale, wasabi, horseradish, capers, kohlrabi, rapeseed, black and brown mustard, and root crops such as turnips and rutabagas). The most well-known compound is sulforaphane, a powerful liver detoxifier and anti-cancer molecule. Thiocyanates boost the body’s ability to enzymatically convert toxic substances in the blood stream into compounds that are easy to expel in the urine. Most of this work takes place in the liver in the form of Phase I and Phase II enzymes, that are supported by isothiocyanate.

Any time you are planning a detox or cleanse, these cruciferous vegetables should be a major part of the regimen. Usual ways to acquire these compounds are in sprouts, salads, and shakes (gentle heating is fine). Add a bit of mustard which contains an enzyme that helps sulforaphane metabolize in the body.

Phenols are some of the most well-known of the phytonutrients. 🥦🫘🫐

  In recent years, polyphenols have made their way into mainstream conversation having been featured in many health articles.

Easy ways to acquire these phenols are by eating dark berries, green vegetables, spices, tea, beans, and lentils. If you consume beans or lentils, soak them eight hours or overnight to remove lectins. Then you can pressure cook them to remove the complex lectin proteins that can cause problems with digestion, gas, and bloating. Some health advocates on the internet try to instill a fear of lectins to sell people useless products. The reality is if you soak lentils or beans for several hours and then pressure cook them, the lectins disappear. The added benefit is you will get a good source of protein plus beneficial phytonutrients like phenols and fiber.

Alkaloids function as nootropics in the human brain (coffee, mushrooms, h**p, and psilocybin). They help expand consciousness, decrease anxiety/depression, and promote healthy neuronal networks. One of the most well-known naturally occurring alkaloids is caffeine and its cousins theobromine, methylxanthine, and taurine. Ni****ne found in to***co also falls in this category. Obviously, caffeine is very useful, but having too much caffeine or too much ni****ne can be a bad thing. This alkaloid category of phytochemicals needs to be treated very carefully.
Certain alkaloids can also function as anti-nutrients because they were originally created as a defense mechanism for plants, fungi, and seeds. Death cap mushrooms, for example, have a life-threatening alkaloid that can be lethal even in small quantities.

Phyto-nutrients are divided into several types: terpenes, phenols, chlorophyl, thiocyanates, phyto-enzymes, phyto-oils, prebiotics, and alkaloids. These eight groupings are critical to your health. There are other smaller groups such as betalains (from beets) and hericenones (from mushrooms), but if you concentrate on the eight major categories, you will find they cover the majority of phytonutrients. Any deficiencies in these phytonutrients cause significant derangements of the mind-gut-immunity.

AVOID LOW PHYTO FOODS 🍔🍗🧀
Many commonly consumed foods are low in phytonutrients and heighten inflammation, for example meat, cheese, dairy, and processed foods. In general, these foods have no phytonutrients in them, and are problematic when they become staples in the diet. Eating these foods occasionally may be acceptable; but consider, every opportunity to eat is an opportunity to heal.
