I imagine you got my sentiment about what is worthwhile use of your time in the last week(s) and days leading up to labor. RELAX. REST. JOY.

I can't tell you how many conversations I have with moms feeling so nervous, anxious, stressed about their due date approaching or passing and feeling so much pressure to do something about it to make labor happen. In part, it's due to the fear of being induced. Or the constant questions from well-meaning friends and family "is baby here yet?"

Ultimately, we don't have a whole lot of control over when labor starts. Focusing your energy on things that bring calm, peace, and relaxation to your body, mind, heart will serve you far better than a long to-do list of things that may get labor going. Not telling you to stop eating dates but if you're stressing about eating dates, probably not worth your energy.

Did you know that the way you anticipate and plan for your postpartum period shapes the way your postpartum period will go?!? That's a given right.....but....

Most mom's I talk to have some basic practical things prepared, thanks to Frida Mom, but not much more besides that. They are armed with plenty of other people's horror stories and comments like 'just you wait' and 'are you ready for the sleep deprivation' and very little more.

Taking the time to put some intentional planning and preparing into your postpartum period will make a world of a difference.

Need some help even knowing what to plan for? Take a moment and schedule a free 30 minute consult at www.ebdoula.com and we can chat about your postpartum plans.

There is a national day for everything these days, right? Well, today is National Chocolate Cake Day. And since chocolate cake is my favorite kind of cake -- it's worth mentioning.

When it comes to birth -- many mom's don't realize how much CHOICE they actually have in how their labor unfolds. Often, a provider will present a next step, in a very matter-of-fact way, that mom's don't realize they have space to ask questions, consider alternatives, share their preferences.

So, take some time prenatally and educate yourself on your options. In labor, ask lots of questions to understand what options are available to you.

Remember, this is your birth. You can have your cake and eat it too.

As a birth worker I get the honor of standing in the gap for each family I support -- insisting that their voice be heard, that their needs be met, that their preferences be honored as they step into the vulnerable yet powerful act of birthing.

Each mom deserves to have peace in her birth; she deserves to have justice present in her birth.

How many ultrasounds do you really need? How accurate are they? Can you ask for more or opt out of them?

According to ACOG, one ultrasound between 18-22 weeks is recommended. This gives you and your provider a clear picture of how baby is doing overall.

Some providers like to get regular or even weekly ultrasounds, others like to recommend an additional late-term ultrasound. If you are 35 or older, they may recommend several additional ones at the end of your pregnancy.

Ultimately, beyond the one at the 18-22 week mark, if your provider recommends more, you can have a conversation about necessity. Asking questions like:

1. How necessary are additional ultrasounds?
2. How would my or my baby's care be different based on the additional ultrasounds?
3. Can I opt out of some or all additional ultrasounds?
4. How accurate is the date/information we are getting?
5. How medically necessary is this?

It's important to note that the further along you are the less accurate ultrasound information becomes. It's harder to measure data points as baby's take up more room.

So often, ultrasounds cause undue stress to families with information that often resolves or is a non-issue in the end.

At times, providers use a late term ultrasound to recommend an induction that may not be medically urgent or needed.

As you consider your care -- remember to be an active participant in your care. Ask about your options, weigh out your choices, and make the best decision for you and your baby every step of the way.

Many mom's have a goal of staying home as long as possible before they head to the hospital or birth center. But how do you actually do that?

1. Prenatally, take some time to consider what coping techniques you will use in labor. Practice them as you feel different aches and pains in pregnancy.

2. Walk through your home with your partner and consider how you will use each space and room in your home. What different labor positions or coping techniques will work best in each. Practice them together.

3. Wait until contractions are strong and long and have been for a while. If you're timing contractions, as a first time mom, waiting until contractions are 3 minutes apart, 1 minute long, and have been for an hour. 3-1-1.
