FAMILY AND FRIENDS SAY FAREWELL TO KISS’ ACE FREHLEY
by George Hudak, Publisher, Tampa Bay Music News

On Tuesday in Yonkers, NY, the music world quietly gathered at the Sinatra Memorial Home on Yonkers Avenue to say goodbye to Paul Daniel “Ace” Frehley. The service was private, by invitation only, and not open to the public. Fortunately, I was able to speak at length with a longtime friend of Ace who attended the memorial, held on October 21 from 4 to 8 p.m.

He described the experience as “surreal.” About 75 people attended, mostly musicians who had played with Ace, recorded with him, or simply hung out with him over the years. Family, close friends, and all the members of KISS were present: Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss. My source said, “Peter Criss was sobbing. He and Ace were the best of friends. While Gene and Paul were the business guys, Ace and Peter were the rock ’n’ roll party boys. They were KISS’s version of Aerosmith’s Toxic Twins.”

Because the event was kept under wraps, many friends were disappointed they hadn’t known about it. When I asked why the service was held in Yonkers, my source explained, “Ace was a Yonkers resident back in the 1980s, living on Bronx River Road and later in other parts of Westchester before settling into his mansion in Connecticut. Ace was a regular at several local rock clubs, including The Crazy Horse in New Rochelle, which was owned by Vinny Pastore, who later became an actor after being encouraged by Larchmont natives Matt and Kevin Dillon, who also frequented the club.”

When I asked why Sinatra Memorial Home was chosen, he added simply, “Sinatra works closely with Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, where Ace will be laid to rest.”

Among those in attendance were rock podcaster Eddie Trunk, KISS manager Doc McGhee, actor and stuntman Chuck Zito (a former KISS bodyguard), and guitarist Richie Scarlet. A Roman Catholic priest delivered the homily, reflecting with humor on his own lack of musical talent, saying he had once dreamed of playing guitar but ultimately “settled for the piano.”

Although not open to the public, many KISS fans posted emotional tributes and photos with Ace Frehley on Sinatra’s website memorial wall: https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/name/paul-frehley-obituary?id=59823395

Frehley was expected to join his KISS bandmates on December 7 when the band was to receive The Kennedy Center Honor. Ace Frehley, GRAMMY® Award–nominated and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame–inducted guitarist and iconic founding member of KISS, died at age 74. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in Morristown, New Jersey, following a recent fall at his home. He was reportedly placed on life support, and the family ultimately decided to turn off his ventilator.

Frehley’s family issued the following statement:
“We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers, and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever.”

Paul Daniel Frehley was born in The Bronx, New York, and began playing guitar at age 13. His musical influences ranged from Led Zeppelin to Cream, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, for whom he worked as a roadie at age 18. With a musical legacy spanning more than 50 years, Frehley began performing with various bands in the early 1970s until he joined Peter Criss, Paul Stanley, and Gene Simmons to form the legendary rock band KISS. As lead guitarist for the band, his persona was known as “Space Ace” and later “The Spaceman.”

Neo-soul legend and "Brown Sugar" hitmaker D'Angelo has died after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, a source confirms to PEOPLE. He was 51.

TMZ reported that D'Angelo (born Michael Eugene Archer) had died in New York City on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

"He was in hospice for two weeks but had been in the hospital for months," the source tells PEOPLE of the star.

DJ Premier, who collaborated with D'Angelo on the 1998 track "Devil's Pie," shared a post via X on Oct. 14 lamenting the news.

"Such a sad loss to the passing of D'angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep Peacefully D' Love You KING," DJ Premier wrote.

The Richmond-born son of a Pentecostal minister began playing the piano at the age of 3, and by 5 years old D'Angelo was playing the instrument with his father at church. A few years later, he began playing the piano at his grandfather's Pentecostal church.

Growing up, he and his two cousins formed the group Three of a Kind and began performing at local talent shows. By 16, he formed another band called Michael Archer and Precise with his brother, Luther.

That year, D'Angelo landed a slot during Amateur Night at the Apollo, where he sang “Feel the Fire” by Peabo Bryson. While he didn't win at the time, he returned to the stage the following year to perform "Rub You the Right Way" by Johnny Gill in 1991 and took the first place.

With his monetary prize, he returned to Richmond, bought a four-track recorder and started writing what would become most of the songs that made up his 1995 debut album Brown Sugar. Brown Sugar peaked at No. 4 on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B Albums chart went platinum within a year of its release. It also earned D'Angelo four Grammy Award nominations.

In 2000, D'Angelo released his sophomore album Voodoo, which peaked at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. The album also won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album and his song "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" received Best Male R&B Vocal Performance, along with a nomination for Best R&B Song.

As he became more regarded as a sex symbol, D'Angelo struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. He was arrested in 2005 and charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana and driving while intoxicated. A week after being sentenced in September of that year, he was involved in a car accident, and was rumored to be critically injured.

While D'Angelo continued collaborating and performing throughout the years, he didn't release his third studio album, the acclaimed Black Messiah, until 2014. The album peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's U.S. Indie Store Album Sales and U.S. Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. It also won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album and is considered a modern neo-soul masterpiece.

Throughout his career, D'Angelo collaborated with artists including Questlove, Common, Q-Tip, J Dilla, Lauryn Hill, Raphael Saadiq and Angie Stone.

In 2024, D'Angelo collaborated alongside Jay-Z on the track "I Want You Forever," which was featured on The Book of Clarence soundtrack. In a 2024 interview with Rolling Stone's Music Now podcast, Saadiq had also confirmed that D'Angelo was working on new music.

Diane Keaton has died. She was 79.

PEOPLE can confirm the legendary actress died in California on Saturday, Oct. 11. "There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness," a spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirms to PEOPLE that they responded to Keaton's home at 8:08 a.m. local time and transported a 79-year-old woman to a local hospital.

Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s thanks to her role in The Godfather films and her collaborations with director Woody Allen. She won an Oscar for Best Actress for 1977’s Annie Hall. Her long career included movies like The First Wives Club, multiple collaborations with director Nancy Meyers and the Book Club franchise.

The actress was born in Los Angeles in 1946 as Diane Hall, and was the oldest of four children. Her father was a civil engineer, while her mom stayed at home.

Still, Keaton thought her mother dreamed of something bigger. "Secretly in her heart of hearts she probably wanted to be an entertainer of some kind," the actress told PEOPLE in 2004. "She sang. She played the piano. She was beautiful. She was my advocate.” -People Magazine

Prayers for a speedy recovery 🙏🏼

KISS legend Gene Simmons was reportedly involved in a recent car crash in Malibu, according to NBC Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department reportedly told the outlet that Simmons, 75, allegedly crashed into a parked car just before 1 p.m. in the 25000 block of Pacific Coast Highway on Tuesday, October 7.

After a witness reportedly called 911, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department explained that Simmons spoke to first responders, claiming that he passed out or fainted before hitting the parked vehicle

Simmons was reportedly hospitalized after the crash, however, his wife, Shannon Tweed, shared with NBC4 Investigates that the musician was discharged and is currently recovering at home.

Tweed, who has been married to Simmons since 2011, claimed that doctors recently changed his medications and that he needs to drink more water. She also alleged that his SUV crossed across several lanes of traffic in the crash and that, as the rocker said, her husband passed out behind the wheel. - Us weekly
