Gout is actually one of the most common and intensely painful forms of arthritis. It’s caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. Uric acid is a natural byproduct of the body breaking down purines—substances found in many foods and drinks. When levels get too high, the uric acid can form microscopic crystals, most commonly in the joint of the big toe. These needle-like crystals cause sudden, intense inflammation, swelling, and pain. Managing gout isn’t just about medications. Your everyday lifestyle choices play a major role.

• Stay well-hydrated: Water helps flush uric acid from the body.
• Maintain a healthy weight: Even a small reduction in weight can significantly lower uric acid levels.
• Avoid high-purine foods: Think less red meat, more veggies.
• Choose plant-based proteins: Beans, lentils, tofu, and nuts are great alternatives.
• Cut back on alcohol, especially beer and sugary cocktails.

If you’re experiencing foot pain that comes on suddenly and feels like a burning or stabbing sensation, especially in the big toe, call (828) 697-8686 (no referral is necessary) to make an appointment. Gout is treatable, but repeated flares can lead to joint damage if left unmanaged.

We all love to take a good vacation, but some foot conditions can stop you from having the fun you planned. Extra activity can lead to some real challenges, especially if you have certain foot conditions.

Plantar Fasciitis: notorious for flaring up with increased walking, especially on hard surfaces
Bunions and Hammertoes: wearing different shoes for travel or simply walking much more than usual can lead to rubbing, redness, and inflammation around the joints.
Gout: Travel can throw off your routines and eating habits. New rich foods or alcohol can easily trigger a painful gout attack.
Metatarsalgia: Highly susceptible to flare-ups from increased walking, especially if your shoes aren’t appropriate.
Ingrown Toenails: The combination of prolonged walking, feet swelling in warmer climates, and wearing shoes that become too tight can cause an ingrown toenail to develop or worsen.

Remember to increase your walking distances in the weeks leading up to your trip, so your feet are better conditioned for the demands ahead.

It’s tempting to cram a lot into your itinerary, but overdoing it can quickly trigger a flare-up. Plan your days with built-in rest periods. And, instead of walking tours, go for a bus tour or a museum visit where you can sit and enjoy the exhibits. Mountain Podiatry can help you get your feet ready. Call (828) 697-8686 (no referral is necessary).

During the warmer months, people tend to spend more time in lighter, less protective footwear—or even barefoot. While flip-flops and sandals may help beat the heat, they provide minimal defense against heavy blunt objects that can somehow always find your unprotected toe.

When your pinky toe meets the corner of a solid object (we’ve all done it) it can feel as if your foot might never recover.

Many toe injuries are minor and resolve on their own, but others require medical care.
• Stubbed Toe: This happens when your toe strikes a hard object—like a chair leg, pool step, or curb—with force. The injury usually affects the soft tissues, skin, and nail, and the pain is often immediate and sharp.
• Jammed Toe: A jammed toe occurs when the joint is pushed beyond its usual range, often due to sudden impact. This can stretch or injure the ligaments and cartilage within the toe.
• Broken Toe: A fracture in one of the toe bones can happen from a strong hit—such as dropping something heavy on your foot—or from a severe stub or jam. It may involve swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the toe.

Our podiatrists can assess the extent of these injuries by checking for swelling, tenderness, misalignment, or restricted movement. Getting the right diagnosis early can prevent long-term problems.

At Mountain Podiatry, our doctors are trained in identifying and treating toe injuries—including fractures—to support a safe and full recovery. Call (828) 697-8686 (no referral is necessary).
