Around here, Huey and Remy take their roles very seriously… 🐾

Part-time greeters.
Full-time morale boosters.
Experts in convincing people to take a quick break and enjoy the moment.

Between the pets, the laughs, and the occasional dog interruption, they’ve become a pretty important part of the Beacon community.

Not the worst coworkers to have around.

Turns out miniature golf is a great place to practice a few important life skills ⛳😄

Patience.
Laughing at yourself.
Friendly competition.
And occasionally accepting that the windmill wins.

At Beacon, independence isn’t built only in serious moments.
Sometimes it’s built through shared experiences, getting out into the community, and enjoying time together.

Also… bragging rights may or may not still be under debate.

There’s something different about eating a meal you made yourself. 🍽️

Not just “I followed a recipe.”
But planned it. Shopped for it. Timed it. Cleaned up after it.
And then sat down knowing — I did that.

At Beacon, cooking isn’t about checking a box.
It’s about independence.
It’s about confidence.
It’s about taking pride in something real and tangible.

Because when you can feed yourself well,
you’re not just making dinner —
you’re building proof that you can run your own life.

And that hits different.

We’re excited to be part of the inaugural Minds of All Kinds Summit at Warren Wilson College on February 27th 🌄🧠

Amanda Hale, Executive Director of Beacon Transitions, will be co-presenting alongside Justin Messinger, Clinical Director at Intrepid Young Adults, for a breakout session titled:

“From Overwhelmed to Ownership: Helping Students Navigate Tools with Intention.”

Together, we’ll be diving into practical, applied executive function tools that help neurodivergent young adults move from feeling overwhelmed in college to taking meaningful ownership of their systems, supports, and success.

We’re grateful to collaborate with Intrepid Young Adults and Justin on a topic that matters deeply to both of our programs — supporting students in building independence with clarity and intention.

If you’re attending the Summit, we’d love to see you there!

Game day done our way 🏈🎱😄

Some folks watch the Super Bowl on a couch… we watched it over a ripping game of pool and good vibes.
While the world tuned into the big game — and watched the Seahawks take it home 🏆 🙌 — we were over here calling shots, sinking balls, cracking jokes, and making the whole thing our own kind of celebration.

Because celebrations don’t have to look one specific way —
as long as it’s good company, good energy, and good fun.

Real talk + real laughs = the best kind of Sunday.

Epic hike unlocked 🥾☀️

With good weather on borrowed time (hello, incoming snowstorm ❄️), we took full advantage and got out for a solid weekend hike. Fresh air, real movement, good views, and that feeling of “yeah, this was the right call.”

No screens.
No rushing.
Just walking, talking, laughing, and letting the brain reset a bit before winter does its thing.

Sometimes the goal isn’t productivity — it’s momentum.
And sometimes momentum looks like enjoying the sunshine while it lasts.

Worth it.

Sun came out, so we did too ☀️

Beacon crew hit the Ecusta Cafe for one of those low-pressure, high-quality afternoons:

• Trying out longboarding (shoutout to a resident who brought his board and the confidence to teach 😎)
• Hanging out with puppies (arguably the real highlight) 🐶
• Good conversations, bad jokes, and a lot of laughing
• Zero rushing, zero expectations—just being human outside

Not every skill is learned in a classroom.
Sometimes it’s balance, sometimes it’s social reps, sometimes it’s just remembering that you can enjoy yourself in the world.

That counts too.

🐐✨ Volunteer Day at the Carl Sandburg Home! ✨🐐

Our Beacon Transitions residents had an amazing time volunteering at the Carl Sandburg Home, helping care for the goats and supporting the farm staff. From feeding and cleaning to learning about daily animal care routines, this was a hands-on opportunity to give back to the community while building responsibility, teamwork, and confidence.

We’re grateful for spaces like this that welcome our residents and make meaningful community engagement possible. The goats were a hit, and the smiles say it all 💚

Our guys had a great time checking out a wonderful community resource this week: Arms Around ASD 💙

They welcomed us into their space and gave us a chance to explore everything they offer to the autism community—which they offer at a fraction of the typical cost. The residents played games, spent time in the sensory room, explored the plant room, and even tried out the chakra mat (which was a hit for at least one very relaxed guy 😉).

We’re so grateful for organizations like Arms Around ASD that create inclusive, thoughtful spaces and provide accessible services and classes for neurodivergent individuals in our community. Highly recommend checking them out!

Our crew took on new heights at the rock climbing gym this week! 🧗‍♂️💪

From problem-solving and body awareness to trust, encouragement, and perseverance, climbing is such a powerful way to build confidence and resilience. Watching residents push past hesitation, support one another, and celebrate each climb (and fall!) is always a win.

Growth doesn’t always happen in a classroom—sometimes it happens one hold at a time.

Our residents had a fantastic time volunteering at the Blue Ridge Humane Society last week! 🐾
Opportunities like this help build confidence, responsibility, and compassion — and the animals definitely enjoyed the extra affection.

We’re grateful for community partners who create meaningful, hands-on experiences for the young adults we support. 💙

A few snapshots from bowling the other week — lots of laughs, a few competitive streaks, and some seriously impressive form from our residents and staff alike.

Leisure time is a huge part of building balance, connection, and confidence, and it’s always great to step out together and just have fun.

Here’s to more moments of joy, community, and friendly competition. 💛
