Dementia from a Patient’s Perspective
Living with dementia can be confusing, frustrating, and sometimes even frightening. While family members and caregivers see the changes from the outside, those with dementia experience the world in a very different way. Understanding their perspective can help provide better care and compassion.
Feeling Lost in a Familiar World
Imagine waking up in your own home but feeling like you don’t recognize it. The furniture looks familiar, but something seems different. You try to remember what day it is, but your mind won’t cooperate. You know you should recognize the people around you, but their names escape you. This is what everyday life can feel like for someone with dementia.
Struggling with Words and Thoughts
Simple conversations can become difficult. You know what you want to say, but the words won’t come out right. Sometimes, people seem frustrated when you ask the same question over and over, but you truly don’t remember asking it before. You may also lose track of your thoughts mid-sentence or forget what someone just told you. This can be embarrassing and upsetting, leading to feelings of isolation.
Emotions and Behavior Changes
Dementia doesn’t just affect memory—it can also change emotions and behavior. One moment, you may feel happy, and the next, you’re angry or scared for no clear reason. Loud noises, crowded spaces, or unfamiliar situations may make you feel overwhelmed or anxious. Sometimes, people say you are acting differently or not like yourself, but you don’t understand why. All you know is that something doesn’t feel right.
Needing Patience and Understanding
Even though your brain is changing, you are still you. You still want to feel loved, valued, and included. You don’t mean to be difficult or forgetful—it’s just part of the disease. What helps most is kindness, patience, and reassurance. A gentle voice, a warm smile, and familiar routines can make a big difference.
