While it is tempting to take the lift or escalator rather than use the stairs, even scaling just a few flights a day could give your health and mind a boost.

Depression is common in patients with dementia, which is why antidepressants are frequently prescribed. However, new research raises serious questions about that strategy.

In a large observational study, certain antidepressants were linked to accelerated cognitive decline in people already experiencing dementia. The study also noted increased risks for falls, fractures, and mortality.

This doesn’t mean emotional support isn’t critical. It absolutely is. The question is how we approach it, especially in such a vulnerable population.

I’ve outlined the data and offered some important context in my latest blog post: https://drperlmutter.com/antidepressants-dementia-patients-time-rethink/

As a member of the NIH Coalition for Whole Person Health Research, the Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine (CCAHM) urges immediate action to restore funding for the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) — the only NIH institute focused on whole person health.

The President’s FY26 budget currently excludes NCCIH, threatening essential research in acupuncture, herbal medicine, pain management, mental health, and chronic disease prevention.

📢 Today, May 13, is Social Media Advocacy Day.
📞 If your Senator is on the HELP Committee, call them today or tomorrow to ask they reinstate NCCIH funding.

Sample message:
“I strongly support continued—and expanded—funding for NCCIH, which helps organizations like mine serve our communities with evidence-based, whole person care. Despite its modest budget, NCCIH plays a crucial role in improving health outcomes and reducing costs.”

🧠 Whole person health is essential.

This is the reality of the struggle those if us in this profession now face.
It’s not only herbs, but also needles & other supplies coming from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, etc.

Dispensary owners say a protracted trade war would harm a niche but popular sector in which imported herbs are prescribed to treat colds, pain and other ailments.

Although it can seem counterintuitive, it’s true. Yes, are cautions and contraindications to this, but most of us can benefit from walking 30 minutes or so per day even with back pain. Remind me to tell you about the time I resolved a month-long bout of sciatica with a 6 mile hike 🙂 And of course, I also recommend acupuncture!

A new study adds to a large body of evidence on the effectiveness of movement for treating and preventing pain.
