Employee Spotlight: Cameron 🖤

Meet Cameron! They love tattoos and creative expression, live music and karaoke, trying new restaurants and coffee shops, and spending time with family, friends, and their dog. Cameron is a big fan of the gym, reading (currently Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler), and learning all things sociology and mental health.

They’re into spicy snacks, especially Tex-Mex and Tajín gummies, love going out dancing with friends, and unwind with TV or time in nature. Autumn and winter are their favorite seasons, Scooby-Doo is a classic, and they were a Warped Tour kid.

As the seasons change, many of us feel a shift in energy. For some, this can mean experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)—a type of depression that typically arises during the fall and winter months. The shorter days and reduced sunlight can impact our mood, energy, and overall mental well-being.

Seasonal depression can bring on symptoms that make life feel heavy, but it doesn’t have to control your life. If you’re struggling with mental health challenges that worsen with the season, it's important to reach out for support and prioritize self-care.

Please know you're not alone. At Heart & Mind, our team of professionals is here to help you find the resources and support you need. Take the first step today by filling out our intake form: https://www.heartmindrva.com/interest

Thanksgiving is a day that carries many meanings. While many celebrate gratitude and togetherness, for some it is also a day of mourning, reflection, and resilience.

At Heart & Mind, we believe that understanding diverse cultural experiences—including Indigenous perspectives—is essential to providing compassionate, effective mental health care.

Healing begins when we make space for the whole story—because the stories we tell about history matter. We also recognize that cultural trauma and historical erasure continue to affect mental health today and contribute to ongoing cultural harm.

🪶 This Thanksgiving, we honor the strength and wisdom of Indigenous communities and invite reflection on how gratitude and truth can coexist. May we all find ways to practice gratitude with awareness, humility, and respect for the full history of this land—and to hold space for the many truths this holiday carries.

The American Academy of Pediatrics now advises against sleep training before 12 months. Research shows that forcing babies to sleep alone too early can disrupt attachment and the development of their nervous system. During the first year, babies need proximity to caregivers to feel safe and secure.

Sleeping in the parents’ room is more than convenience. It provides constant reassurance, allowing the infant’s nervous system to learn safety and stability. This closeness supports emotional regulation, stress management, and secure bonding, all of which are foundational for long-term mental and emotional health.

Babies who are left alone too soon may experience heightened stress responses, making it harder for them to self-soothe and regulate emotions later. Proximity during sleep wires the brain to understand that the world is predictable and safe.

Parents can implement safe room-sharing by keeping the crib or bassinet next to the bed, maintaining a firm sleep surface, and avoiding loose bedding. This setup allows babies to sleep safely while staying close enough to benefit from the calming presence of their caregivers.

Remember, proximity is not spoiling. It is a biological necessity that helps babies thrive. Safe closeness today builds confident, resilient children tomorrow.

Today is Children’s Grief Awareness Day. This day reminds us how important it is to support children who are grieving and how deeply they benefit from the patience, understanding, and care of others.

In recognition of this day, we’re sharing our resource, “When Someone Your Child Loves Dies,” created to help caring adults support a child who has experienced loss: https://ow.ly/zHUj50XpH1a

If you’d like to help us continue creating resources that nurture and guide children through grief, we would be deeply grateful for your support.

The holidays often revolve around food, and for many people, that can bring up complicated feelings.

Diet talk, comments about bodies, or disrupted routines can make it hard to stay connected to nourishment and self-compassion.

Therapy can help you untangle those feelings—exploring how to build a relationship with food and your body that feels supportive, not stressful.

This season, remember: your worth isn’t measured by what’s on your plate or how your body looks. 🕯️

The holidays can bring joy, connection—and sometimes, pressure, stress, or grief.

You’re not alone if this time of year feels complicated. Whether it’s navigating family dynamics, expectations, financial strain, or the pressure to feel “festive,” the season can stir up a lot.

Therapy can be a grounding space to reflect on what the holidays bring up for you—and to build strategies for caring for yourself through it.

Take time to pause, breathe, and remember: it’s okay to set boundaries around your peace this season. 🎁
