Beginning July 16, 2022, a new three-digit phone number β€” 988 β€” will be available 24/7 for people to call when they are or someone else is having a behavioral health crisis or emergency. 988 is short and easy to remember, like 911, which people can call for all other emergencies.

Until then, people can call the 24/7 National Su***de Hotline number: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or text the crisis text line by texting Oregon to 741741.

How 988 works: When someone calls 988, they will reach a compassionate, highly trained counselor who can help address their issue in the least intrusive way possible. The counselor is part of a call center that is linked to a network of services, so the caller will be connected quickly with the right kind of help, from the right type of helper.

According to the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline, more than 95% of current calls are resolved over the phone. When more help is needed, the counselor can connect the caller with mobile response providers or first responders, who will either help the person onsite or transport them to where they can receive the help and stabilization services they need.

Like all of you, our hearts broke after the tragic event in Uvalde, Texas. There is nothing that will take away the fear parents/guardians might be feeling sending their children to school in the coming days, weeks, months, and possibly years.

But what we ask is that you share, with your students, neighbors, and communities, a tool that is available here in Oregon. Your Oregon State Police are the administrators of SafeOregon. SafeOregon is a school safety tip line that gives kids, parents, schools, and their communities a way to report safety threats or potential acts of violence. Together, we will empower people to speak out and spark change.

SafeOregon can be accessed using a web portal, mobile app, email, phone call, or text. All tips go immediately to a tip line technician 24x7x365. These tips are promptly analyzed and forwarded to designated personnel who can provide further assistance in resolving reported incidents.

The types of tips that come into the tip line are a threatening, criminal, or violent acts such as Bullying/Harassment; Cyberbullying; Suicidal Ideation; Possess, use, or distribution of drugs; Sexual Assault/Harassment; Threat to Safety; Child Abuse; Threat of Assault; Self-harm; Depression; Fighting; and Theft.

To learn more visit SafeOregon.com. There are approximately 1190 schools K-12 currently using SafeOregon. To learn if this program is utilized by your K-12 Oregon school, contact your school directly.

This is not a tip line to file complaints against the school or faculty. It is against the law to misuse SafeOregon.

"John Gottman from the Gottman Institute has done extensive research regarding relationships and what makes them happy.

One of the more interesting findings is about the magic ratio. After examining couples and how they dealt with conflict, it seemed that happy couples for who love lasts show five positive interactions for each negative one.

[...]So, let’s say there is a conflict between a couple where one criticizes the other. Then, to resolve this conflict they can try positive interactions, which for example are showing empathy, apologizing, being affectionate, showing appreciation or interest."
