Change

As we head into the first week of spring 2024, I’m thinking about change: change of season, change in relationships, internal change, sometimes change of scenery.
Many of these are the normal cycles of life but sometimes change hits us hard.
Maybe it’s something we brought about ourselves or the environment or the universe asking us to open up. We face change, and even if we know in our hearts it is necessary and good and will take us to a better place, change is difficult.

I’ve recently been through such change. A combination of my own necessity, my desires, and the universe pointing me in a direction. The two weeks spent were indeed life altering and I successfully navigated it, but the real work comes now.
What do I do a week later after I’m home communicating with family and friends, so easily falling back and old patterns. How do I take the change that I know deep in my heart is good and right and necessary, how do I take that change and make it real?

This is not an extensive list. Not an exhaustive list. But here are some things that I’m in finding work a little bit. I’ll get back to you in a month to see how it’s really going. . .

1. Every day for at least five minutes, but preferably more, meditate on the feeling you’re trying to cultivate.
2. Spend time doing the thing that spurred the change. Or spend time reflecting on the “why” things changed. Realize that sometimes change just happens and the sooner the reality is accepted, the sooner adjustment can be made.
3. Practice being the observer of your reactions. It can be helpful to start thinking of your life as not your life but your friend’s life: How would you react if this were happening to your friend and not to you?
4. Realize that we’re all just trying to do the best we can to avoid suffering. Many people do things because they are suffering and are unconsciously trying to avoid it. They didn’t mean to hurt you.
5. Much true change is not from doing/being more but from simply letting go.
