When Lucy was born at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, she faced a critical challenge: she couldn’t breathe properly.

Diagnosed with Pierre Robin sequence, a condition that affects a baby’s jaw and mouth, Lucy needed immediate, specialized care. A team of experts from pediatric general surgery, plastic surgery and the NICU came together to perform a lifesaving jaw distraction surgery — giving her the ability to take her first real breath and a chance at a healthy future.

At Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, our NICU, pediatric surgery and craniofacial teams collaborate to provide advanced care for babies born with complex conditions like Pierre Robin sequence.

Lucy’s journey is a powerful reminder of the difference expert care, teamwork and hope can make.

🎗️ September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Ford’s story highlights the hope that research and innovative treatments bring to children facing this disease.

At just 2 ½ years old, Ford was diagnosed with one of the most aggressive forms of pediatric cancer. His treatment journey took him from his home in Pittsburgh to a major cancer center in New York before his family turned to Dr. Giselle Sholler at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital for advanced care.

Thanks to clinical trials and research led here at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital and Penn State College of Medicine, Ford now has access to a new therapy designed to prevent relapse in high-risk neuroblastoma — giving him hope for the future while he continues to live life as normally as possible.

🎥 Watch Ford’s story and discover how breakthroughs in medicine and the power of Penn State are helping children like him fight cancer.

Back-to-school season often brings an uptick in viral illnesses — and sore throats can be especially tough for families to manage.

Leah Kaye, MD, pediatrician at Penn State Health Pediatrics in Hershey, shares tips for parents:

🌡️ Fever and sore throat without cough/runny nose ➡️ see your doctor.

🤧 Sore throat with cough/runny nose ➡️ likely viral, no antibiotics.

🍯 Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, honey, popsicles or cool drinks can ease pain.

🩺 Call your doctor right away if your child has trouble swallowing liquids or moving their neck.

💜 Penny Update 💜

Penny continues to thrive in maintenance therapy and is doing well clinically. She finished the school year in person and loved helping first graders get ready for the transition from the early childhood center to the elementary school.

This summer, she’s enjoyed trips to the beach and other adventures, and she remains on track to complete therapy in August 2026. We’re so proud of her progress! 💙
