🤢 Stomach bug season is here

Norovirus, sometimes called the “stomach flu” or “winter vomiting bug,” spreads easily and can hit kids hard. Young children, older adults and people with weaker immune systems are most at risk.

💧 How it spreads: contaminated food, surfaces or close contact with someone who is sick
🧼 Prevention: wash hands with soap and water, clean high-touch surfaces, cook food thoroughly, and avoid preparing food if you are sick
🥤 Recovery: rest and fluids are key. Watch for dehydration and seek care if symptoms are severe

Is your child sick with the flu? Here’s where to turn for care.

As flu, RSV and COVID-19 circulate this winter, knowing where to go can help your child recover safely while keeping emergency care available for children with serious or life-threatening conditions.

🏠 Mild symptoms: Children with a fever under 103, cough or congestion who are able to drink fluids can often recover at home. Families can also contact their child’s pediatrician, visit urgent care or schedule a virtual visit.

⚠️ Higher-risk children: Infants younger than 3 months and children with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems should contact their pediatrician early in the illness.

🚨 Emergency care: Seek emergency care or call 911 for breathing problems, bluish lips or face, signs of dehydration, ongoing vomiting or unusual sleepiness.

💉 Flu shot reminder: It’s not too late to vaccinate. Flu shots can help prevent severe illness and hospitalization.

What’s going around this week?

Pediatricians at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital are seeing:
🤧 Flu
😷 Viral upper respiratory infections
🫁 Bronchiolitis
👂 Ear infections

Dr. Leah Kaye, pediatrician at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital, shares helpful at-home tips for parents:

🌡️ Fevers (in children older than 3 months) can often be managed at home if comfort improves when the fever comes down
💧 Encourage fluids
🌫️ Use a humidifier
🍯 Honey may help reduce coughing for children over 1 year old
💦 Saline spray or drops can ease congestion

📞 Call your child’s provider if️ a cough lasts more than two weeks without improvement.

A new step forward in pediatric brain cancer research 🔬

Researchers at Penn State College of Medicine are working to advance a new treatment approach for children with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), one of the most aggressive childhood brain cancers.

Through its leadership of the Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium (Research: Beat Childhood Cancer) and Four Diamonds, in partnership with Targepeutics, the collaboration is helping move a targeted therapy called GB13 closer to clinical trials at Penn State Health. The therapy is designed to attack tumor cells while protecting healthy brain tissue, with a focus on children and adolescents who currently have very limited treatment options.

“Our goal is to pursue the most promising science and move it into clinical trials with urgency and rigor,” said Dr. Giselle Sholler, chair of the Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium and division chief of pediatric hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital.

New Treatments Offer Hope for Children with Epilepsy

Seizures can disrupt everyday life and put children at risk for injury. At Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital, advanced treatments are helping kids live safer, fuller lives.

Maverick, 2, went from having dozens of seizures a day to just one or two after receiving vagus nerve stimulation and brain surgery. He’s now catching up on speech and development and has more time to play, learn and grow.

Noah, 18, struggled with seizures that medication couldn’t control. After resection surgery, he became seizure-free, returned to school and is thriving in sports, academics and everyday life.

Our team combines cutting-edge treatments — including surgery, neuromodulation devices and specialized dietary therapies — with around-the-clock monitoring, personalized care plans and coordinated support for families. This approach helps children reduce seizures, protect development and get back to living life to the fullest.

Teddy Bears Take Over the Ice! 🧸🏒

Fans of the Hershey Bears made this year’s GIANT Teddy Bear Toss unforgettable — sending 81,796 teddy bears and stuffed animals onto the ice to benefit Children's Miracle Network Hershey at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital and other local charities.

Thanks to The GIANT Company, CMN will receive a $100,000 donation — and more than 150 volunteers will help deliver the bears to over 60 local and regional organizations, bringing comfort and joy to children throughout the community.

Miracle Child Izzy Rivera and her family joined the fun on the ice — showing just how much happiness a little generosity — and a lot of teddy bears — can bring to kids and families. 💙
