🎄✨ Thanks to the generosity of our community, families at Penn State Health Children's Hospital experienced a little holiday magic at the Nittany North Pole.

Months of planning by our hospital team and an outpouring of community donations made it possible for parents and caregivers to enjoy a free shopping experience filled with toys, books, blankets, stocking stuffers and more — all aimed at easing the season for families spending the holidays at the hospital.

Volunteers, including Penn State College of Medicine students, were on hand to help families find the perfect gifts. Families also had the chance to enter raffles for big-ticket items, with winners receiving their surprises delivered right to patient rooms.

For many families, this event offered a meaningful moment of joy during an incredibly difficult time — and reflected the care, compassion and support that surround our patients every day.

We’re grateful to our Child Life team and to everyone who donated, volunteered and helped make the Nittany North Pole possible. Your kindness brought comfort, smiles and holiday cheer to our kids and families when it mattered most. 💙🎁

🎅 When Dr. Daniel Lodge, a cardiothoracic surgeon at Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center, took his 7-year-old son Sasha to Grings Mill Dec. 13 to see Santa, he did a double take.

“Mr. Rhodenizer?” he asked.

It took Santa a moment — Dr. Lodge had grown an impressive beard since they last met. Then Santa’s cheeks grew even rosier as he exclaimed to Sasha:

“Your daddy saved my life! Your daddy saved Santa!”

Back in August 2022, Jim Rhodenizer went in for pre-op testing before knee surgery. The tests revealed severe aortic stenosis, and Dr. Lodge performed open-heart surgery to replace his narrowed valve.

Santa’s recovery was swift, and he was back to checking his naughty-or-nice list in no time.

We know where Dr. Lodge ranks. And now Sasha does too. The boy was beaming with pride in his dad. ❤️

Some gifts are truly priceless. 🎁

🎅 Operation Holiday Returns! 🎅

For the third year in a row, the Patient Experience team along with hospital and nursing leaders at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center came together to spread holiday cheer for patients who can’t be home this season.

Carts filled with holiday props, cozy blankets made or donated by volunteers, and candy made their way across adult hospital units. Patients had the chance to snap festive selfies to share with loved ones 💌 — and the Grinch, on his best behavior, popped in to steal some smiles and spread cheer to patients and staff alike!

Santa may only visit during the holidays, but year-round he’s right here at Hershey Medical Center. When he’s not in his Santa suit, refined over the years, John Gable serves as the administrative secretary for the Heart and Vascular Institute. This year marks his 20th year making the season a little brighter for our patients.

We’re so grateful for this heartwarming initiative and to everyone who helped make the day magical for our patients. 🎄✨

✨🎄 A holiday visit to remember at Penn State Health Golisano Children’s Hospital 🎄✨

Mrs. Claus stopped by to share a bit of holiday cheer with our patients, reading “Twas the Night Before Christmas” and bringing the warmth of the season to every room she visited. 🤶

She wasn’t alone — the Grinch, visiting from The Hershey Company, joined her along with other friends to help spread smiles and brighten the day for our youngest patients.

Moments like these remind us how meaningful it is to bring comfort, joy and a sense of normalcy to children spending their holidays in the hospital. We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this visit special for our patients and the team members caring for them. 💙

‘Tis the season… for holiday treats! 🍪🎄

With indulgent meals and sweet treats around every corner, how can you enjoy the holidays without overdoing it? Heather Tressler, registered dietitian at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, shares simple tips to stay healthy while savoring the season:

✨ Enjoy favorites in moderation – One special meal or treat won’t undo healthy habits. Savor it!
🥗 Balance your plate – Pair indulgences with veggies, protein and nourishing foods.
🏃‍♀️ Keep moving – A short indoor workout, dancing, or a walk outside can boost mood and manage stress.
❌ Skip the fad diets – Extreme plans aren’t sustainable. Focus on daily healthy choices instead.

“Look for ways to move your body, and feed your body well,” Tressler says. “Managing holiday indulgences is about balance, not restriction.”

A Team Approach to Life-Changing Parkinson’s Care

When Brandan Mehaffie first noticed unusual symptoms during a triathlon, he didn’t realize it was the start of a long journey toward a Parkinson’s diagnosis. Years later, he found the support he needed at Penn State Health — a coordinated team built for complex neurological conditions.

At Penn State Health, Parkinson’s care isn’t handled by a single provider. Neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychiatry, physical therapy and advanced practice teams work together to meet each patient’s evolving needs.

This team approach led Brandan to BrainSense™ adaptive deep brain stimulation (DBS), a next-generation system that uses real-time brain activity to automatically adjust therapy. Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center was the first in Pennsylvania — and one of only 23 hospitals nationwide — to offer this advanced technology.

For Brandan, the results have been life-changing: more consistent symptom control, fewer manual adjustments and the ability to return to activities he loves — including leading a Parkinson’s-specific spin class. 🚴‍♂️

“These awards reflect our unwavering commitment to the highest standards of quality and safety across Penn State Health,” said Kyle Snyder, president and chief operating officer. “They underscore the dedication of our physicians, nurses and staff to delivering exceptional care every day.”

Penn State Health and Mid Penn Bank raised an incredible $355,000 through their 10th consecutive No Shave November campaign, supporting prostate cancer research and screenings through Penn State Health’s Department of Urology.

Meet Jeffrey Schott, a real-life Santa whose world changed when he suddenly lost his ability to smile. For someone who brings joy to children every Christmas, losing his smile was devastating.

Thanks to the expertise of Dr. Jessyka Lighthall, a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Penn State Health who specializes in facial nerve restoration, Jeffrey found hope. Through advanced treatment and compassionate care, she helped him regain his smile — and the magic he shares with children each holiday season.

Watch how Santa’s smile returned and how expert care helped him continue spreading joy. 🎅✨
