Restoring blood supply to transplanted tissue is one of the toughest challenges in reconstructive surgery.

With a $3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Penn State's Ibrahim Ozbolat, PhD, of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, and Dino Ravnic, MD, of Penn State College of Medicine, are combining 3D bioprinting with a surgical method called micropuncture to guide blood vessel growth and improve healing.

Their goal: to create engineered tissues that can survive and thrive in the body — transforming how surgeons rebuild after devastating injuries.

Why do some vaccines provide longer-lasting protection than others?

A new study from Penn State College of Medicine shows that B cells — usually known for making antibodies — also help shape the immune system’s long-term memory by producing a critical signaling molecule during flu infection.

This discovery could help researchers design stronger flu vaccines and improve treatments for conditions like cancer and autoimmune disease.

🌍 Twice a year, Shawn Li, MD, PhD, associate professor of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Penn State College of Medicine, travels to Uganda with Chad Zender, MD, from University of Cincinnati, through his nonprofit, Head & Neck Outreach, Inc.

Working alongside Jeffrey Otiti, MD – a local head and neck surgeon – and his residents, the team manages complex cases such as large goiters, parotid tumors and jaw tumors, some requiring free flap reconstruction.

During their July trip, they spent five days at Kiwoko Hospital, a rural center two hours outside Kampala. In that time, 13 patients underwent surgery, including 7 free flap reconstructions.

Each procedure is a powerful example of global collaboration—bringing advanced care to patients who need it most.
