Does prenatal opioid exposure determine a child’s future in the classroom? 📚

New research from Penn State College of Medicine suggests it does not. The study found no clear link between prenatal exposure and later classroom performance, underscoring the importance of environment, support systems and early-life experiences in shaping outcomes.

These findings challenge stigma and highlight the potential for every child to thrive.

🧬 Inspiring the next generation of health care professionals

Penn State Cancer Institute recently welcomed high school students from Harrisburg, Lancaster and Lebanon for the C.A.R.E.S. (Community, Advocacy and Research Education for Students) Program, held in partnership with the PA Breast Cancer Coalition.

Through hands-on breakout sessions led by faculty, staff and trainees, students explored cancer research and clinical care up close, from viewing cancer cells under a microscope to learning how zebrafish models advance research, and even trying ultrasound and robotic surgery techniques.

Programs like C.A.R.E.S. are helping students discover future pathways in science, health care and advocacy while building a deeper understanding of breast cancer research and care.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this experience possible and for inspiring the next generation of changemakers. 💙

💙💚 Honoring the gift of life.

Today, Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health partnered with the Gift of Life Donor Program to host a Donate Life Flag Raising Ceremony, bringing together patients, donor families, clinical teams and community members to recognize the life-saving impact of organ, eye and tissue donation.

The ceremony featured remarks from clinical and community leaders, as well as powerful stories from transplant recipients and donor families, highlighting the generosity that makes this work possible.

This Donate Life Month, we reflect on the lives saved, honor donor heroes and encourage others to consider registering as organ donors.

Because one decision can change everything. 💙💚

We are proud to see our faculty sharing research at the national level and helping improve care for patients everywhere! 💙

Aleksandra Zgierska, MD, PhD, Jeanne L. and Thomas L. Leaman, MD, Endowed Professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Family and Community Medicine as well as professor of public health studies and anesthesiology and perioperative medicine, has been invited to present her research on chronic pain and opioid use before members of Congress.

At a Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) briefing on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, April 14, Dr. Zgierska will present research showing that mindfulness-based therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy can be effective, non-opioid treatments for chronic low back pain. Her work helps patients manage pain, improve quality of life and reduce reliance on opioids.

New research involving Penn State College of Medicine found that later sleep and wake times in teens are associated with poorer diet and more sedentary behavior. 💤📊

Researchers found that teens with later sleep schedules consumed more calories, snacked more frequently and spent more time sedentary. The findings suggest that sleep timing is an important factor in adolescent health and cardiometabolic risk, not just how long teens sleep.

The study’s senior author is Julio Fernandez-Mendoza, PhD, Edward O. Bixler Professor of Psychiatry and behavioral health at the College of Medicine, and several other College of Medicine researchers were co-authors on the study.
