Is your eczema or your child's eczema flaring? You are not alone. This is a time of year which makes everyone more itchy- no, it's not your nerves about preparing for thanksgiving, (although stress can also be a potential trigger), but rather due to various environmental triggers. Possibilities include the colder, dryer climate, or now that the heaters are on, the indoor dryness may be predisposing to the exacerbation. Regardless, schedule an appointment to get help. We will discuss different moisturizers, topical steroids and non-steroid options, and different application techniques such as wet-wraps. Certainly, we will also discuss allergy testing to see the role of common environmental and food allergens that may be at play as well. See us soon to clear up your skin and to alleviate some of that itching!

I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing summer. If by any chance you are someone you know had a severe reaction to a bee, wasp, or hornet while enjoying the great outdoors, know that there is a potential LIFE SAVING treatment that you may be eligible for. I am referring to venom immunotherapy, which is where you would become desensitized to the stinging insect venom to prevent a severe reaction in the future. Be safe and schedule an initial consultation so that you no longer have be afraid of the potential harm of an insect sting.

Friends,

As we prepare our children to go back to school it is important to re-assess school preparedness in the management of food allergies, which includes identifying those individuals at risk for a severe food allergic reaction. A recent journal article highlighted that even with nut-free environments, allergic reactions to nuts still take place, and more common are reactions to other common food allergens such as milk and egg. Adolescents have been identified as a particular group at risk as they are immunologically more prone to severe reactions and often don't carry their epinephrine auto-injectors. Lets address these concerns on a community and on a personal level. In the upcoming weeks I hope to be in touch with local school administrators to plan for anaphylaxis management and for patients and their families with food allergy concerns, lets address them together. Schedule your initial consultation today.

How to Manage Mosquito Bites

Mosquito bites are a bothersome problem, especially during the summer. They are itchy, swollen, and in some circumstances can even become infected. The redness and swelling is caused by a hypersensitivity reaction to the saliva of the mosquito. This reaction is an immunologic reaction, but not an allergic reaction. As such, allergy medicine such as benadryl, zyrtec and others will not be effective. Tip: Apply a very mild anti-inflammatory cream such as hydrocortisone. If this is not sufficient, you may need a prescription strength topical cream. Wishing everyone a safe and itch free summer,

Now is the the best time

Friends,

A number of my patients who receive allergy immunotherapy (allergy shots) mentioned to me that this past spring, despite the high pollen counts, was their best yet. No sneezing, eye itching, runny nose, nasal congestion etc. They were able to go outside and enjoyed doing so. Perhaps using an oral antihistamine on an as needed basis was all it took to control their symptoms, as the allergy injections took care of the rest. This therapy is available to all but it needs time to work. Schedule a visit today to get evaluated and to learn more about our allergy immunotherapy program and let the next spring be your best one too!

Friends,

We are truly in a new era of medicine. Just last week, I had a patient with severe, persistent, and uncontrolled asthma who had required over ten steroid bursts in the past year to control her symptoms. She had to be maintained on daily prednisone just to be able to climb a flight of stairs or to sleep through the night. Within two days of starting tailored biologic therapy, she was not only off of prednisone, but feeling great. If you know of anyone suffering from uncontrolled asthma, let them know that there are amazing therapies that can help them breathe and feel well again. Have them call the office to schedule an initial consultation.

Non-Steroidal Topical Treatments

Dry Skin? Inflamed Skin? Inflammatory skin conditions are common and can cause a great degree of discomfort. While topical steroids are often the quickest way to clear the rash there are several non-steroid topical therapies that may be effective as well, without steroid side effects. Such examples include Epiceram, Eucrisa, and Protopic. Make an appointment today to discuss these prescription only options.
