Patient of the Week: Meet Stella

Stella came in for a recheck of her bilateral allergic conjunctivitis, showing improvement.

During her visit, we also noted changes that raise suspicion for early SARDS (Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome)—a condition that can lead to rapid vision loss in dogs.

🔍 What this means:
Early signs can be subtle, making follow-ups and advanced diagnostics essential for timely detection and management.

💙 Stella’s case highlights the importance of not overlooking underlying conditions when treating what may initially appear as a routine ocular issue.

Careful monitoring and early intervention give us the best chance to support our patients’ vision and quality of life.

Earth Day | See the World They Depend On

Every eye tells a story. From the smallest tree frog to the animals we care for every day, vision connects them to their environment—and their survival depends on it.

This Earth Day, we’re reminded that protecting natural habitats means protecting sight, health, and life itself. A cleaner, healthier planet allows every species to see, hunt, navigate, and thrive.

At Animal Eye Consultants of Iowa, we care for vision—but it starts with caring for the world our patients live in.

Protect their world. Protect their vision. 🌱👁️

Using confocal microscopy, we can visualize microscopic damage within the cornea—highlighting dark zones caused by fluid accumulation and endothelial dysfunction.

This level of detail allows for earlier diagnosis, targeted treatment, and better visual outcomes for our patients.

Because vision care goes beyond what the eye can see.

From Cloudy to Clear: Restoring Vision Through Corneal Surgery

This patient presented with advanced corneal endothelial disease, leading to severe fluid accumulation within the cornea—causing opacity, a cloudy appearance, and significant vision loss.

Using confocal imaging, we identified multiple dark zones corresponding to areas of fluid buildup and endothelial damage, confirming the extent of corneal compromise.

What did we do?
We performed corneal surgery to provide vascular support to the affected tissue—helping restore clarity and bring back functional daytime vision.

Early diagnosis and advanced imaging make all the difference in preserving sight.

Did you know that red spots or growths on your pet’s eye could be more than just irritation?

These changes can sometimes be linked to vascular tumors like hemangiomas (benign) or hemangiosarcomas (malignant), which arise from blood vessels.

Early detection is key. If you notice any unusual redness, masses, or changes in your pet’s eyes, don’t wait—have them evaluated by a veterinary ophthalmologist.

At Animal Eye Consultants of Iowa, we’re here to protect what matters most—their vision.

Did you know that dogs can develop Horner’s syndrome?

This condition occurs when the nerves that control the eye are damaged. You may notice:
• A sunken eye appearance
• A very small pupil
• Drooping eyelid

While it can sometimes seem like a simple eye issue, it may signal something more serious.

Unfortunately in this sweet patient, Horner’s syndrome developed as a result of brain cancer .

At Animal Eye Consultants of Iowa, we routinely use advanced CT brain imaging to detect underlying causes affecting the eyes and vision, including tumors.
Early diagnosis can make all the difference.

Subtle changes matter—don’t ignore them.
Trust their vision to us.
