There are many ways to care for a family saying goodbye to their loved one. One way is to keep our kitchen at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy stocked with homemade meals. Recently, a family member shared this note with us.

“Thank you so much for the care you gave our loved one. Not only was our loved one cared for well but so was the family. We were well fed. Thank you!”

Together, we can ensure that families at the Hospice House feel cared for and supported every single day. Sign up to be one of our volunteer cooks at www.mercycare.org/hospice-meals or reach out to our Hospice Volunteer Coordinator ebushlack@mercycare.org for more information.

Congratulations to Hospice of Mercy’s Tawnya, Donna, and Bailey, who recently earned Compliance and Quality Certification - Hospice from the Accreditation Commission for Health Care!

As we celebrate our 45th anniversary, our team is working on 45 acts of service. Recently, we were honored to collect supplies and donate them to Willis Dady Homeless Services, Freedom Foundation and YPN. We appreciate all the ways they serve the community.

The heart of Hospice of Mercy care is love, remembrance and deep compassion.

Each week, our team comes together to honor the memory of those we’ve had the privilege to care for through a beautiful and meaningful tradition — our memorial tree. Each leaf on the tree is created with a staff member’s thumbprint, representing a patient who has recently passed. It’s a gentle way for us to remember, to grieve and to celebrate lives that have touched ours so deeply.

This process is more than symbolic. It allows our team to support one another through shared loss and to find healing in togetherness. It reminds us of the trust families place in us and of the lasting impact each person leaves behind. This weekly memorial keeps memories alive, strengthens our bonds and honors the sacred work we are called to do.

Give the gift of hospice care this holiday season. For 45 years, our hospice team has had the privilege of being there for families like Steve's at a uniquely tender moment, saying goodbye. Learn how you can help at https://www.mercycare.org/giving/lovelights/.

A visitor recently surprised us with a beautiful gift, a Quilt of Valor. He and his wife had visited a patient at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. During their visit, another patient passed, and they witnessed our veteran's ceremony — a reverent tradition we offer when a veteran passes. During this solemn time, the veteran’s body is draped in an American quilt, our staff lines the halls and our volunteer bugler plays Taps as the veteran is escorted out with dignity and honor.

This couple not only witnessed the ceremony during their visit but also joined us, even though they did not know the person they were honoring in that moment. They were deeply moved and reflected on the power of this special goodbye after returning home. They made a remarkable decision — to donate his father’s personal Quilt of Valor to our Hospice House.

His father’s quilt, once wrapped around a life of service and sacrifice, will now continue its journey by honoring others — veterans in our care, who will be remembered and respected in their final moments.

It is hard to express the depth of gratitude we feel for this gift. It is more than fabric and thread. It is a legacy. It is love. It is honor stitched into every seam. To the family who gave this precious quilt — thank you. Your generosity will touch lives and carry forward a tradition of remembrance and reverence for all who have served.
