💙 National Hugging Day – January 21 💙

Today we celebrate the power of connection. A simple hug can provide comfort, reduce stress, and remind someone they’re not alone. 🤗

At Kanza Mental Health and Guidance Center, we know that human connection plays an important role in mental wellness. Whether it’s a hug, a kind word, or simply showing up for one another, small acts of compassion can make a big difference.

This National Hugging Day, take a moment to wrap someone in warmth and kindness—or reach out in a way that feels safe and meaningful to you. Together, we can continue to support mental health and build stronger, more caring communities. 💙

✨ Kanza Is Happy to Announce Sandy Twombly as Our New Outpatient Clinician!

👋 Name & Credentials: Sandy Twombly
📍 Role: Outpatient Therapist
💬 Why did you become a therapist?
From my earliest memories, I have had a strong desire to help others on more than just the surface level. I didn't know what the official job title was until my second year in college when I took my first social work course. I would love to say that the journey to therapist from that point on was a straight line but there were lots of bends and curves that got me to where I am today. I want to walk with others through their biggest victories, toughest losses, and all of the life that happens in between all while offering support, hope, and the skills needed to navigate being human.
🧠 Clinical interests:
I have the lived experience of working with children and adolescents prior to joining the outpatient team at Kanza. I have worked within the foster care system and within the school system which has given me experience in working with children with behavioral concerns, trauma exposure, and emotional regulation difficulties. However, I am open to working with all age groups as I feel each population has something unique to offer.
🌱 What clients can expect when working with you:
My first priority is creating an environment where you feel safe and heard. It takes an immense amount of courage to take the first steps on your therapy journey and admit that you don't want things to continue the way that they are. Change can be difficult, and I will be here to help you in navigating new and different ways of thinking.
🧘 Self-care go-to:
My self-care changed when I realized that self-care doesn't have to be so cumbersome. I realized that self-care can look like listening to one my favorite songs when I'm stressed or giving myself the grace to get up and go for a quick walk when I am overwhelmed.
✨ Fun fact:
At any given point, there are at least ten tabs open in my internet browser. Currently I'm at 18.
📣 Message for clients starting therapy:
All you have to do is show up for your first appointment, we can work on the rest together!

Today we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and reflect on his message of kindness, service, and treating others with dignity and respect.

May this day serve as a reminder to lead with compassion, listen with empathy, and support one another in our communities.

🌳 The Trauma Tree 🌳

At Kanza Mental Health and Guidance Center, we believe healing starts by understanding the root—not just the symptoms.

The leaves of the tree represent how trauma may show up: anxiety, panic attacks, dissociation, substance use, difficulty concentrating, and more. While these symptoms are often what we see first, they are not the cause.

The roots tell the deeper story—experiences such as abuse, neglect, loss, violence, illness, or other adverse life events. If we only “trim the leaves,” the tree continues to grow. True healing happens when we compassionately address the roots.

💚 Our approach is grounded in trauma-informed care, meeting individuals where they are and supporting long-term healing and resilience.

If you or someone you love is struggling, you’re not alone. Help and hope are available.

Hope for a Healthier Tomorrow

Kanza has been serving clients since 1963. Our core mission has always been to help clients learn to positively and effectively cope with life’s difficulties, demands, pressures, and perceptions.

While our core mission remains the same, the factors that impact mental health have changed significantly. Everything from how we define family and role expectations, to instant access to information on the internet, and the fact that others have access to huge amounts of personal data about us online have all evolved since 1963. Additionally, what is also seeing a radical shift is our sense of security and stability as the result of economic pressures, increased violence, and most recently a world-wide pandemic.

One of the more positive changes that has happened since 1963 is the evolution of how society views mental health. People have moved from viewing mental health as something that is stigmatized and that we don’t talk about, to recognizing it is as important as physical health when it comes to quality of life. Society is beginning to embrace an openness about the fact that most individuals deal with a mental health event at some point in their life

As our clients’ needs have changed, Kanza’s professional, caring staff have embraced new ways to meet our clients where they are. We now offer opportunities like telehealth, a therapy dog, and more presence in the schools to meet the needs of children. We care about improving our clients lives and further illuminating the benefit of robust mental health services. We believe recovery is a process and is possible with the right support.
