ABUS for Dense Breasts
Annual mammograms are the best way to catch breast cancer early, but not all breasts are the same. Dense breast tissue can mask the appearance of tumors, making it more difficult for mammography to detect cancer. If you are one of the 40% of women with dense breast tissue, your provider may recommend automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) for additional screening and added peace of mind. This week, October 9-15, is Emergency Nurses Week. Frye Regional Medical Center celebrates our emergency nurses for their incredible commitment to care. No matter what comes through the emergency department doors, our nurses face it head-on. We are extremely grateful for all of our emergency nurses!
We have another Best of the Best coming your way! The RN winner for this quarter is Teresa Cone, RN, from telemetry.
Teresa made a huge impact on one of her recent patients. She had a patient who came in for open heart surgery. This patient was a local pastor, and was extremely nervous for his surgery. The night before his surgery, Teresa was providing care for him when he mentioned his fears about the surgery. She explained to him what the surgery would entail and what to expect when he woke up. Teresa then prayed with this patient. He said, "She didn't push it on me, I was the pastor, but she knew what I needed." He says her prayer helped him in that moment after surgery when they were removing his breathing tube. Teresa's nominator said, "I remember those nights on telemetry and how busy we were. I also remember how Teresa took that time to be with that patient and comfort him."
For Teresa to take a few extra minutes to relieve his anxieties, hold a hand and say a simple prayer, it just shows the compassion and care she has in her heart. Teresa was his lifeline that night and the day after; she truly is the best of the best.
The Best of the Best Award and Recognition Program is Frye Regional Medical Center's way of honoring its highest performing staff and physicians--those who strive to demonstrate Frye Regional’s motto of “Our Best, Every Day” and exemplify the five Best of the Best standards: compassion, reliability, communication, courtesy/respect, and safety.

It’s been a long journey for Scott Hensley. On March 22, the 50-year-old was discharged from the Frye Regional Inpatient Rehabilitation Center after spending 206 days battling COVID-19. He started feeling ill in mid-August of 2021 and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Frye Regional Medical Center on August 28. Scott spent nearly five months on a ventilator, four months in a long-term care facility, and the past 28 days in our Rehabilitation Center receiving physical, occupational and speech therapy as well as specialized nursing care to prepare him for this big day and the blessed life ahead of him.
Today, hospital staff lined the halls of Frye Regional to cheer on Scott and his wife Melanie, a nurse practitioner with FryeCare Cardiology. Their daughter Maegan, a monitoring technician for telemetry patients at Frye Regional, joined the joyful procession as healthcare workers celebrated Scott’s remarkable recovery and wished him well. Scott says he lost nearly 80 pounds over the past seven months, but he is back to eating all his favorite foods, including the sweet apple fritter a staff member lovingly picked up for Scott on her way into the hospital this morning. Here’s to you, Scott—stronger, steadier and better every day! #FryeRegionalFamily #CountOnUs
Today, hospital staff lined the halls of the Frye Regional Inpatient Rehabilitation Center to cheer on Jeffry Bivens as he was discharged to his home. Mr. Bivens was hospitalized with COVID-19 on December 11th and spent over 13 weeks in our care, including 23 days on a ventilator in the ICU.
“It’s been a long road, but I have seen the best of humanity at this hospital,” he said to the healthcare team. “Every person, every floor, what you did for me and my family has been phenomenal. What you all do day in and day out for strangers like me… you’re unbelievable. You put your life at risk. You are all heroes!”
His wife Kristie Bivens added: “We came here as strangers. We are leaving as family. We can’t thank you enough.”
