Interoception is our body’s internal messaging system—helping us notice, interpret, and respond to the signals coming from within. This often-overlooked sensory system allows us to recognize what’s happening inside our bodies so we can take action: eating when we’re hungry, drinking when we’re thirsty, using the restroom when we need to go, or calming ourselves when we feel overwhelmed.

Sound like a familiar struggle for some of the kids we support? Difficulties with interoception can affect focus, behavior, regulation, motor planning, executive functioning, and so much more.

OT & SLP: What’s the difference? Occupational therapy (OT) helps people engage in daily, meaningful activities by supporting physical, cognitive, and emotional well-being. Speech-language pathology (SLP) focuses on communication and swallowing, enhancing social participation and safe eating. Both play a vital role in helping individuals live full, independent lives!

There are 3 hidden senses that rarely get talked about: vestibular (balance + spatial orientation), proprioception (body position + force), and interoception (internal body cues).

When these systems are overwhelmed or underdeveloped, kids may appear fidgety, anxious, clumsy, or unaware of their needs. These sensory gaps can impact everything from emotional regulation and body control to handwriting, playground skills, transitions, and even how safe or confident a child feels in their own body.

Understanding these systems helps us recognize what a child really needs—and support them with strategies that make daily life feel calmer, smoother, and more manageable.

Does your child gag at yogurt, but love yogurt puffs? You’re certainly not alone—and this usually isn’t about being a picky eater.

Many children have sensory-based food aversions, meaning certain textures feel overwhelming, unpredictable, or even “wrong” in their bodies. Thick, slippery foods like yogurt can trigger a gag response, while crunchy, predictable textures feel much easier to manage.

Occupational therapy helps kids understand their sensory world, learn how to tolerate new textures, and approach mealtimes without stress. With the right support, confidence—and variety—can grow.
