Cases of measles have been found in Polk and Buncombe counties, North Carolina. To make sure your child is protected from the measles virus, parents should call their child’s health care provider or our Immunization Clinic (828-695-5881). The best way to keep your family and our community safe from measles is to receive the full schedule of the MMR vaccine.
Measles is highly contagious and is spread through person-to-person contact and through the air. Symptoms usually begin 7 to 14 days after exposure, with some cases appearing up to 21 days later and they may include:
• High fever, which could reach more than 104 degrees.
• Cough
• Runny nose
• Red, watery eyes
• Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums and roof of the mouth (Koplik Spots) two to three days after symptoms begin
• A rash that is red, raised, blotchy; usually starts on the face and spreads to the trunk, arms and legs three to five days after symptoms begin
Anyone who is concerned that they may have measles should call ahead to their provider office, urgent care, or emergency room before entering the building to prevent the spread of the virus.
