Do any of these resonate with you? Our unconscious behaviors are often safety seeking and intended to reassure us.

Often, however, they lead to conflict or distress in a relationship.

Becoming more aware of our relational patterns, their purposes and origins, can help us recognize and change what is no longer serving us.

Please share if this this is helpful.

It can often seem like we go from 0 to 10 in an instant when we are upset. The reality is, there are many steps in between. When reach levels 7-10, the logical part of our brain begins to cease functioning, and we begin reacting from the older portions of our brain which are our survival responses- fight, flight, or freeze/ shut down.

When we begin to notice we are at a 5/6, we can take a pause and intervene. We can try to breathe, change the environment, or practice other self-soothing/ coping strategies to prevent further escalation and help return us to a lower level.

At a level 5, for example, I notice more tension around my eyes, my shoulders and neck. I notice I am breathing more shallow.

At a 7 I feel a lot more tension and have to force myself to take deep breaths.

At a 10 I feel out of control, almost like tunnel vision and feel like I want to physically run or explode. The pressure feels intense.

When I notice I’m at a 5, things I do include pausing to focus on the feel of air as I breath in through my nose and out through my mouth. I go outside. If I can’t go outside, I wash my hands for 30 seconds and pay attention to how the soap smells, how the water sounds, how it feels etc.

What are some things you do to shift your moods/ self-soothe?

Being in a loop of self-criticism or shame truly is suffering. It is painful and it sticks with us in everything we do and every person we interact with.

The great news is that we can learn to get out of these cycles and train our brain to do so!

The first step is awareness, then acknowledgement, then offering some compassion.

You can do this!

If you find this helpful, please share with others who might as well ❤️

These may seem like basic ideas, but it’s important to recognize the impact of each of these things when we are suffering emotionally.

Often we think, “I should be able to handle this,” or “I don’t know why I’m feeling so upset”.

Next time you find yourself having a hard time or hard moment, do a quick check in these 5 areas.

I encourage this because often we blame ourselves for having a hard time emotionally, when there are usually other factors at work.

Doing our best in each of these 5 areas can help keep our mood more balanced.

If you are struggling with emotional regulation and seeking therapy, I have openings for individuals in DC and NC.

If you’re not ready for therapy but want some tools to help manage your emotions , check out my course Emotional Regulation 101 (link in bio)

Guilt can be used as a means of coercion and control in relationships.

It can occur in any kind of relationship: parent-child, romantic, friendships, and even work relationships.

Guilt makes it difficult for the person on the receiving end to be autonomous , as it keeps them doubting their decisions, anxious, and often stuck in a pattern of submission.

The next time you experience a guilt trip or feel the impulse to lay guilt on someone else, try asking, “what boundary is not being respected here?”

Share this with anyone who may find themselves frequently on the receiving end of a guilt trip. When we begin to recognize the problem is not with us, but the other person’s lack of respect for our boundaries, we become empowered to make different decisions.

PMDd often gets mistaken for pms because and those who experience it often suffer as a result.

Pms and PMDd are not the same thing.

For a diagnosis of PMDD, Over the course of a year, during most menstrual cycles, 5 or more of the above symptoms must be present.

Symptoms disturb your ability to function in social, work, or other situations and are not caused by another medical condition.

PMDd symptoms occur 1 to 2 weeks before your period, then go away when you get your period.

PMDD is a chronic condition that requires treatment due to its severity, yet many go undiagnosed and suffer because of internalized messaging to “suck it up.”

If these symptoms look familiar to you, I encourage you to talk to your healthcare provider. Be very specific about your symptoms and begin tracking their onset and duration each month.

Share this with anyone who might be struggling with PMDD and are unsure if they should seek help.

When our body is under stress a cascade of physiological reactions occur to adapt to the stress. Energy is released which would enable us to run away or fight if we were under attack.

In chronic stress, that energy doesn’t get used up.

What does that energy feel like for you? Does the energy feel like anxiety or fear? or anger or irritation?

Here’s a further explanation of the strategies listed above:

- Crying. When you begin to cry, turn towards the crying in the physical experience of crying such as how the tears fear of streaming down your face, how the snot coming out of your nose is running, if you feel flushed, etc. The crying will end on its own.
- Movement - If you feel a lack of energy and hopelessness, Gentle movement can be the most helpful. If you are feeling a flood of energy- staying still is not helpful. You need to discharge the energy safely. Vocalization can be helpful shouting or punching into a pillow, singing, dancing.
- diaphragmatic breathing. The key here is slooooooow breathing and pushing all the air out, like you would if blowing up a balloon. This activates the vagus nerve, in turn triggering a relaxation response.

- Positive social interaction - connecting with other people gives your body a signal that it is somewhere safe - can be a small positive social interaction between you and the grocery store clerk
- Real, side-splittingLaughter
- Affection- A 20-second hug can you change your hormones, lower your blood pressure and heart rate and improve mood.
- Creative expression- taking something difficult and moving it outside of yourself through creative expression.
- Imagination can move us through the cycle. Imagining in creative ways processing the experience.

High functioning anxiety is a hard thing for so many people who are “high achievers”. There is an internalized pressure that often doesn’t show on the outside.

It can be isolating, frustrating, and exhausting to feel the internalized weight of all that you manage.
