Catawba Valley Cardiology welcomes our newest provider - Marisa Hyatt, MSN, APRN, AGACNP-BC!

Marissa Hyatt became a registered nurse in 2011 after earning her Associates Degree in Nursing from York Technical College. Her early nursing career was spent in intensive care units, including both general ICU and cardiovascular ICU settings. While working full-time, she completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing through the University of Texas at Arlington in 2015. She later transitioned into emergency nursing, where she served as a charge nurse and expanded her clinical skills further. During this time, she also briefly worked as a travel ED nurse, gaining exposure to diverse healthcare systems and patient populations.

Motivated by a desire to do even more for her patients, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care from the University of Texas at Arlington and received board certification from the ANCC in February 2019. Since becoming a nurse practitioner, she has been practicing in cardiology specialty clinics in North and South Carolina. Her professional passion lies in delivering exceptional cardiovascular care, staying up to date with the latest advancements in the field, and helping patients achieve better health outcomes.

Marissa currently resides in Statesville, North Carolina, with her husband and their two sons. When she is not cheering them on at football, baseball, wrestling, or band competitions, she enjoys gardening, reading, singing, and staying active through exercise.

Thinking about back to school? If so, you may have thought about getting your child's physical completed before the school year begins. Katie McMinn, PA-C from Catawba Valley Family Medicine - Claremont, talked to us about physicals and what you need to know about them.

Physicals are very important for a child's health. They are a great way to screen for any potential health concerns, and to ensure your child is developing appropriately. Katie recommended physicals for babies at birth, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 18 months, and 24 months, then once a year after that. North Carolina state law requires that every child entering public school for the first time receive a health assessment, occurring within 12 months prior to entering school. Physicals are also often required for students to participate in school sports.

A physical typically takes about 45 minutes to complete. Summer is a good time to complete these since kids are out of school, and sports seasons at schools start soon, but they can be completed any time of the year. Katie said a parent or guardian can call the office anytime to schedule a physical, and a repeat physical for the next year is typically scheduled at check-out.

All physicals include a full physical exam, looking for any potential concerns, as well as ensuring the child is growing and developing appropriately and meeting all milestones. Routine physicals are a great way to detect and address any delays very early, and it is the perfect time for parents to discuss any concerns they may have about their child's health, growth, and development. Bloodwork is not a typical part of physicals, but it may be necessary if there are concerns. Specific screenings are also often performed during physicals, and they will vary based on age, such as a hearing and vision screenings. Also, childhood vaccines are monitored to ensure the child is up to date.

Katie said, "As healthcare providers, we like to make sure parents stay up to date with yearly physicals because although childhood disease is rare, early detection is key. Plus we love to see how our kiddos have grown over the year!"
