In the last couple of weeks, the Happy Animals®️ product lines have taken off like a rocket. Listen Lucy...I did a similar post last year, but reminders are good, right?
Sallie says....
"Evaluate your mares weaknesses in order to breed for strengths."

The popular choice is not always the right choice for your mare.
Just because you like/love a stallion, doesn't guarantee the best choice physically. Fix the mare's physical problems by crossing on stallions with stronger features than the ones she is lacking, then address her mental traits. Is she anxious? a handful?.... The next step is sort the stallions that fix the physical but also are known to have a good mind and are laid back. In my experience the mare's mental game carries forward nearly 90% of everytime I've bred. I try to counter that if its a problem that will interfere with performance or the foal being USER FRIENDLY enough for resale. Producing horses with that usability is key because most people are not professional trainers. Not everyone needs a high energy foal even if they are bred to be winners.

Incentives are different bag of tricks and I can go into that ALL DAY LONG, but I won't. Another day, another time....This subject makes me soooo tired.
We raise 1-2 of those "pinks or rubies" a year, but only out of proven 1D mares. But I will always use the above formula FIRST to make the breeding decisions and then the incentives factor in LAST.

My next breath of air may be wasted on this. Please remember you are creating a living, breathing, representation of your knowledge & your program. Your foal may be on this earth possibly 25-30 yrs if they land in a soft spot at the end of their life. Think about what's most important. Your legacy of leaving the barrel racing world a better horse, or that quick dollar of trying to just breed whatever mare you can get your hands on because you desire a buckle incentive (or even a certain color for that matter. TBH, if you make a winner, you shouldn't give two sh*ts about what color they are). Stay off the "what would you breed to this posts", & get some real help from someone individually that knows the game. And, also know that HONEST stallion owners will help you. They will upfront tell you if something hasn't been a great cross. They don't need blown up hard to train foals on their stallion's record. That's not the best advertising for their program. I've seen some outstanding studs get a bad wrap on foals, that honestly shouldn't have been a cross to begin with. What stallion owner needs to any of what they do to be harder? None I know.

Lastly, I want to also state that there is always an exception to EVERY RULE IN THIS POST. Even with the most careful planning, and meticulous hypomatings, there's those horses Mom & I called "naturals". They are those miracle horses that weren't pedigreed correctly or even supposed to make barrel horses, but had this one little thing that no one could contain. Its called "heart". If you break every rule of thumb I've mentioned above? Then pray for one of those. They are the little freaks of nature that will surprise the hell out of you & win every single time. Plus, there's nothing a barrel racer likes better than a great story they can tell over and over. 😉😉 🤣

Happy Animals LLC / Stephenville Tx is going to host a saddle fiting soon for Double J Saddlery w/ rep Tracy Weeks Kloecker. I am getting an idea of the interest involved for that. We will hold it here @ 777 Ranch, Stephenville Tx so that if she brings a few saddles you can ride them around in the covered arena here. Fittings will be by appt only. If you guys have any interest in that, please respond here, and I will write your name down. I am making a list of interested people. We are waiting for this cold wet stuff to pass before we schedule a date. But it will be during the week, and I'd like to coordinate it with perhaps a day that 377, Lightning Bar or PYP has a jackpot just so some of the out of town girls could make good use of their fuel, get a saddle fitting and also make a jackpot locally.
