What do you think of medication for weight loss?

I get asked this question all the time.
Here is my response.
I do support the use of medication for weight loss, in certain circumstances.

Let me explain.
- Medication can be used if you've tried other approaches to weight loss first and aren't yielding results.
- Medication can be used if there is a biological barrier to weight loss that is hard to overcome on your own.

But...There are some things you should know.
- Obtaining medications for weight loss can be difficult and costly.
- We are seeing more muscle loss (not ideal) with these medications.
- Side effects can be difficult to manage.
- In some instances, people who use medications are not consuming enough calories (way way way below what I would recommend). This could also be problematic.

What happens when you stop the medication?

When coming off of these medications you are likely going to feel your hunger at full force (whereas these medications are dampening these cues).
It's important to make changes while you're taking the medication.
I would also recommend talking with a dieititan who can help you transition off of the medication when it's time.

If you're consider medication, I recommend you talk with your doctor to find one that works best for you.

Yep, you read that right.
I am a registered dietitian and I don't eat my fruits.
I drink them.

To be honest, I love fruit! But I was finding that I wasn't reaching for fruit as a snack or as much as I would have liked.
So, I started drinking them. Almost every morning I make a small fruit smoothie. Just a blend of a few different fruits that I have on hand. No added sugars or sweeteners, just fruit.
By doing this I'm getting all the benefits of fruit that I wouldn't be getting otherwise.

Why do we keep talking about eating fruits?
Well, fruit is lower calorie so it supports weight loss.
Tons of vitamins & minerals. All things your body needs to operate at peak performance
Great source of fiber. Helps you stay full longer and promotes regularity.
Amazing antioxidants.
So fruit is basically amazing.

A few of my favorite combos are:
Banana, mango, and pineapple
Pineapple, blueberry, and mango
Blueberry, strawberry, and banana
Watermelon, blueberry, beets, and mint
Strawberry, blueberry, and banana

You could make some crazy good combos here too. And don't be scared to add a few herbs to add a little extra flavor.
If you need a little extra protein in your diet you could a scoop of protein powder or yogurt to help bulk it up.

It’s the sunshine vitamin because our bodies can make Vitamin D through the UV B rays in the sun.
That feels a little like 🌱photosynthesis🌱 to me.
This is a big one, especially now that we have fewer hours of sunlight.

Our body uses Vitamin D to support our immune system, regulate our mood, and have healthy bones🦴. Did you know that Vitamin D has been shown to help lessen the effects of respiratory illnesses?

Because we get some of our Vitamin D from the ☀️, deficiencies are pretty common. Especially in the winter time when we spend more time indoors, covered up, and the sun sits lower in the sky.

Some signs and symptoms of a Vitamin D deficiency include:
🥱Fatigue
🦴Body/Bone aches
💤Poor sleep
😵‍💫Mood changes
😞Signs of depression
🤧Being sick more often

Luckily, lots of commonly consumed foods have Vitamin D such as
🍣Salmon
🥚Egg Yolks
🥛Fortified Milk
🐟Canned Tuna and other fatty fish

And of course, you can go outside for about 10-15 minutes. If you plan on being outside longer, please take the proper precautions and protect your skin and 💦hydrate💦!

You know, I hear it all the time... "I'll change _blank_ in the new year".
Why not start now?
Getting a head start on making changes will only get you closer to your goals.
Sometimes the idea is so overwhelming that we push it out until a significant day or time, such as New Years.
Making changes and losing weight shouldn't be overwhelming or dreadful.
Yes, it does take some thought and effort but it doesn't have to suck.

Next week is going to be a B U S Y week!
Anyone else having a crazy week ahead?

I'm trying to stay on top of the week by planning and prepping! Today I sat down and planned some of my meals with my meal planner so I don't have to worry about it the day of.. which for me is a LIFESAVER!

Something else I have been doing to help save time is prepping my ingredients! If I'm cutting an onion for one thing, I will cut the rest of it and save it for the next dish. And it is a game changer!

It’s Sunday.
All the people visiting have left. Tomorrow is the start of a new week - work and back to school.
And not to mention transitioning from one holiday into another.

It’s hard to get back into the routine after such a fun and busy week.
As I always say… Do what you can when you can.
If you can only make it to the gym 3 days this week.. that’s okay.
Can only make dinner 4 nights this week.. that’s okay.
Just focus on the things you’re able to as you’re getting back into your routine.
Some things you could try to do as you get back into your routine:
- write it down.
- plan it out.
- have a back up plan

The holidays are here!

I hear it all the time that people are worried about their weight loss progress during the holidays. And I'm here to remind you of these tips to get you though it.

1. Don't skip meals anticipating a larger meal in the afternoon.
This is a hill that I will die on.
Skipping meals can lead to you getting super hungry and you are more likely to overeat.

2. Build a balanced plate. Put what you want on your plate and add what you need. Do you want mashed potatoes? Great! But maybe add some other vegetables too. Just don't forget the pie!

3. Practice mindful eating. Honor your fullness when you're eating. It's so easy to eat beyond that and that can often leave us feeling uncomfortable. But if you're worried that someone will sn**ch all the green bean casserole before you do, go ahead and make another plate and save it for later. Because, you will get hungry again later.

4. Just have a great time. That's it. Just enjoy the day. It's just one day. Enjoy it. Pick up right where you left off the next day.

Why do I exercise?

💪🏼I exercise because I love they way it makes me feel.
💪🏼I exercise because I feel strong because I can pick kind of heavy things.
💪🏼I exercise because it’s a display of what my body can do.
💪🏼I exercise to feel strong.
💪🏼 I exercise to do my best to prevent diseases and age healthfully
💪🏼I exercise because I have to lug my 30 lb toddler around 😅

While yes, exercise does support weight loss, it’s so great for your body, even if you don’t lose a pound.
Exercise supports
❤️ heart health
🧠 brain health
🙂 mood
➡️ blood sugar control
🫶🏼 and so much more

I have this amazing machine that can measure how efficiently your metabolism is working by a simple breath test. Crazy, I know.
