Here is some great information about osteoporosis from my friend and colleague, Deborah Stanton of MovingRoom Coaching

Here is some great information about osteoporosis from my friend and colleague, Deborah Stanton of MovingRoom Coaching

💡As promised, last week when I posted about bone growth, I said I would circle back and discuss osteoporosis. Look, I know most of us know what Osteoporosis is but let’s take a closer look. There is a lot more to learn about it..

🌟Osteoporosis
✅A disease of increasing bone fragility that is initially subtle, effecting only the cancellous bone. If you remember from my last post about bone, the Cancellous is the spongy part of the bone on the inside.

✅Eventually the fragility will effect all of the bone, including the Cortical bone, which is the hard outer
layer of the bone.

✅If you have not read my first post on bones, I encourage you to do so before you continue to read this one.

🟣What Happens When You Have Osteoporosis?

✅When you have osteoporosis, the process of bone reabsorption exceeds bone deposits. In other words, the way your body typically makes bone is disrupted and your skeletal system is weakened.

✅One might experience an osteoporotic back fracture from opening a window or brake a hip getting up from a chair. This is how fragile your system becomes. It’s scary!

✅All of these symptoms of fragility are dependent upon an individual’s strength, shape, size, quality, and bone architecture.

🟣 Who Gets Osteoporosis?

✅The symptoms of osteoporosis often appear in elderly individuals, especially small framed white and asian women but that is not the only population affected.

✅Postmenopausal women are especially vulnerable to changes in the strength and stiffness of their bone due to hormonal changes. This makes them more at risk for fractures.

✅Very active athletes that participate in heavy exercise training can also have bone loss from amenorrhea. (Loss of menstruation from exercise and stress). Some athletes skeleton will resemble that of an elderly woman because of this.

✅There is definitely a sweet spot when it comes to exercise. You can over do it!

🟣How You Are Affected (And What You Can Do)

✅Lifestyle and activity habits seem to play an important role in maintenance of bone health. The diameter of bone is at its maximum between ages 30 and 40 for both men and women. After 30, a loss of 0.2% -0.5% of mineral bone occurs yearly. Accelerating after menopause for women 50% more! (It is speculated that a substantial amount of bone loss may be related to inactivity).

✅In older populations, bone restoration still occurs, but it is just slower and you’re primarily slowing the process of losing the bone. This is why strength training, particularly using heavier loads, is sooooo important. Especially in perimenopausal, and post menopausal women.

✅Strength training plays a critical role in maintaining and developing future muscles. There is truly nothing else you can to equip yourself with that will give you the return that mechanical loading does.

✅Bones must be stiff yet flexible, and strong yet light. Strength is necessary for load bearing, and lightness is necessary to allow movement

✅How you challenge your body now will build a better structure for you tomorrow.

🟣 Bone Building Activities

✅The forces should be high, the body will actually desensitize rather quickly. This is why body weight and lighter weight exercises will not be sufficient to help build bone.

✅It will work at first if you are just beginning, but you do need to lift heavy relatively to your size. Moderate jumping is good for your bones as well, so incorporating some plyometrics into your training is a great strategy as well.

✅Bone Building Activities:

🟣Strength Training
🟣Power Lifting
🟣HIIT (depends on what you do)
🟣Basketball
🟣Gymnastics
🟣Soccer
🟣Running
🟣Sprinting
🟣Jump Rope

Another great review about Jules Wallace, LMBT.

I was having severe back pain and was looking for a massage at the last minute on a Friday. The owner called me back immediately. She was able to get me an appointment right away! I was so relieved. My therapist was Jules. She was absolutely incredible! She has a lot of experience and I definitely needed someone good. She was kind, compassionate, a great listener and easy to talk to. I enjoyed my conversation and learned so much during my short time there. I have been there twice and hope to go every week. I will never go to another massage therapist in this city. She’s a holistic practitioner and has a ton of knowledge. -Lisa H. Oct 29 2024

Way to go, Katia Clements, LMBT!

Hands-On Health Massage & Physical Therapy is not just one of the best places in High Point and the surrounding area, but THE best place! I am very picky when it comes to deep tissue massages since I have a specific issue with my upper back. I've changed many massage therapists until I got in Katias's hands. She is the master expert, knows exactly where and what the problem is and how to tackle it. The place is clean and quiet, with soothing ambient music and a calming color scheme that adds to the relaxing atmosphere. The attention to detail and personalized care provided by Katia and other Malia's team members is truly exceptional. The service is phenomenal, with a warm and welcoming staff who go out of their way to ensure that every client feels comfortable and well-cared for. All in all, it's everything a person needs for a rejuvenating and therapeutic experience. - Jelena L.

If you guys are looking for a place where they truly care about your health and body, this is it. I went in for sciatica and dull upper back pain. After a few massage sessions with Jules and following some recommendations from her, including breathing exercises, my pain was gone. She was very easygoing and I could tell that she had done some research on my case before my first session with her. I also had a couple of physical therapy sessions with Malia and she was incredible. She did a complete head-to-toe assessment, pointing out which body areas were weak or tight and gave me various exercises that would help strengthen and improve them. On top of being incredibly knowledgeable, Malia is a very dependable and supportive individual. I called her once feeling defeated because my back pain wasn’t improving and she took time to listen to my concerns and helped me calm down with reassuring and detailed answers. She also went to the gym with me to help make sure I was doing my workout routine exercises correctly. I cannot thank her and Jules enough for the progress that I’ve seen this last month after following their recommendations. Thank you so much!
