So, what is the difference in lens materials in glasses?

There have been several materials over the course of eyeglasses. Up until the 20th century all lenses were glass. The drawbacks were weight, but the optics were good. Then came CR-39 which offered a lighter weight option, but the scratch resistance wasn’t as good. Polycarbonate came next and it was lighter and more impact resistant than the previous two materials. High Index or sometimes spelled Hi-Index came next in the evolution of lenses. Lastly, Trivex came to market. This was an even better impact resistant lens.

We offer at Jabi, Polycarbonate and Hi-Index. Why?
Polycarbonate lenses are some of the safest lenses for flying objects. While the lenses aren’t meant to be safety glasses unless the frame has Z-87 on it, the lenses will resist breaking when flying objects hit them. All children under 18 should have this material. All our glasses include polycarbonate lenses with anti-reflective coating at no additional charge. This lens usually costs $150-350 for the lens alone.

We offer Hi-Index for the person who wants the thinnest lens possible. We want to make sure you have the options and can choose for yourself the lens that is best for you. All Hi-Index lenses also have an anti-reflective coating and scratch resistant.

We are always here though, to answer questions or offer suggestions if need be!

At what age should I begin to worry about smaller print being blurry?

This is a second part of the last question.

Let’s talk about what causes small print to become blurry first and then we will talk about age. In the simplest of terms, the lens of the eye loses its elasticity as it was when you were young. When you look down, your eyes converge about 1.5 millimeters each eye and your lens will get thicker (think of a magnifying glass here). This creates more magnification and makes words larger. This is called, accommodation.

So, when do most people have this life changing event? The most common age that is talked about is 40 years old. Some people need help with accommodation before 40 but most can make it to 45 to 50 years old. How do they do that? Light! The more light you have on the object you are trying to read, the easier it is to see words. You can prolong having to get bi-focals or progressives with bright light and by pushing the item you are reading out further from your eyes. Some people will say, “my arms aren’t long enough anymore!” This is normal and part of aging.

What can we do for you at Jabi Optics? We offer the lowest price on progressives that aren’t made outside the U.S. All our progressives come out of a lab in Mississippi. Progressive lenses are like TV’s and any other technology that gets better over time. Most optical retailers give you old technology so they get the lenses cheaper and can have a high margin. At Jabi, we get the latest technology so you can see your best. We use a digital lens (some call these HD lenses) that makes new wearers more comfortable while adapting to lenses. We do all of this at a low price so you can have more spending money for gas, groceries, more glasses for different looks or just to put some money back for a rainy day. We are here to help you and believe that sight should be a right!

Are vision problems hereditary?

What a great question! There are a few things to consider.

The answer is... It depends. Yes, genetics can contribute to various eye issues. For example, Cataracts, astigmatism, glaucoma, MD, and myopia or hyperopia. What you need to understand though is that other factors are important as well.

Cataracts are also caused by the sun's ultra-violet rays hitting the lens of your eye. Think about how headlights look when they get old. That yellowing is what happens to the lens of your eye. Some studies have shown that the risk of getting glaucoma and cataracts is raised by smoking to***co. The big take away here is that you can’t do much about your genetics, but a healthy lifestyle and diet can help reduce the risk of all types of health issues, including eye issues.

So, what can Jabi Optics do to help you? Wearing lenses that have UV protection will help you reduce the chance of cataracts and macular degeneration. All our lenses come with UV protection. Whether it is a clear lens or sun lens we have you covered. We sell premium products for the best and cheapest price because we truly believe in affordable eye-care. Sight should be a human right!
