Today we want to take time to celebrate Kenny, a steadfast member of Caring Services and the surrounding community. During a sit-down conversation with Kenny, he shared how CSI has helped teach him to think and live again, given him tools to stay focused and positive and keep a good mindset, to recognize maladaptive behavior, or as he put it, “learn to see the negative before it arrives.”
From the beginning, Kenny has been proactive with service work for CSI’s community, from advocating for awareness with CIT training to stepping into leadership roles -- a trait that later earned him the offer of a house monitor at one of CSI’s recovery homes -- Kenny has demonstrated the importance of building new relationships. Kenny spoke proudly of his role as a house monitor, mentioning how his role has taught him how to work through problems and maintain community. Kenny wants to showcase a precedent for success; he does so by helping where needed and working to set good examples. Kenny said his favorite moment of developing a great starting ground as a house monitor with new arrivals is to sit with them during their first few days and build healthy communication.
As a reminder and in celebration of his recovery journey, Kenny has framed all three certificates he has earned while at CSI. In his own words, "I love the new life sobriety has provided me, and how I can work through life with confidence.”
While talking about his family, Kenny shared a heartfelt story about spending time with his cousin at Sheetz. A regular day! Kenny said his cousin just bust out into tears and hugged him, saying he was so proud and happy to watch Kenny get sober and stay sober. Reuniting with his family, Kenny also shared how they never gave up on him.
Kenny’s journey with his family demonstrates an important part of recovery, though it always begins with oneself; recovery can and will extend its grace to others; to family, to friends, and to the people one may encounter along the way.
Nowadays, Kenny is exploring love with a partner, making the transition to permanent housing, studying for his license and hoping for a car in his future.
Fun Fact: Kenny is a local chess master!
