Black History Month isn’t over yet, Yogis. ✊🏾🤎

A Brief History of Black Yogis in America — Pt. 1 by Micheal Sinclair via the Medium sheds light on the long-standing history of Black people practicing yoga in America since 1926. Despite misconceptions, Black yogis have been influential spiritual leaders in Bhakti, Karma, and Jnana forms of yoga.

Efforts to include Black individuals in the yogi community date back to the 1970s, with figures like Angela Davis embracing yoga for its transformative power during times of struggle. Black yogis view yoga as a means to transcend daily challenges and cultivate inner strength.

Today, yoga is often marketed to non-people of color, but its roots in Black history remain significant. For Black individuals, yoga serves as a grounding force amidst life’s complexities, offering a path to inner peace and resilience.

In a world where wellness is often marketed to non-people of color, it’s time to reclaim our space on the mat.
