I had a patient this morning complaining about vertigo that he sometimes gets in the morning. He describes it as a feeling of his balance being off and after he burps a few times, he feels better. I let him know that this is not that unusual and is really not vertigo specifically. There is an old word that used to be used a lot called "biliousness". This comes from the word "bile" which is the major component of gall bladder fluid. When there is a back up of bile it can cause that feeling of imbalance and burping can help, if it is not too severe. Vertigo can be complicated--knowing the cause is the key!

One of the top medications sold, both over the counter and by prescription is for stomach acid. People with gerd, heartburn, etc complain of an acidy feeling and are given something for relief. And the pills often make people feel better. The only problem, is that those feelings usually come from too LITTLE stomach acid.

What happens is that the lack of stomach acid causes food to sit in the stomach for too long and then the food begins to ferment. When it ferments, due to lack of stomach acid, it gives off an acid of its own. This is the acid people generally feel, not stomach acid! So what do they take? Something to lessen stomach acid. Doesn't this just make things worse? Of course..and the side effects are enormous. Another example of temporary relief that just makes things worse.

Wishing easy digestion in this holiday season!

Do you know this about your immune system? part 2

In order for your immune system to work well you need oxygen in your cells. In fact, you need oxygen for nearly every process. This has nothing to do with breathing which you do anyway, but rather with oxygen carriers. The main basic oxygen carrier is iron. When people are low in iron, oxygen doesn't get around your body and you often suffer outwardly from fatigue-in addition to your cells not being able to function at capacity-including your immune system.

In addition, there is another deeper and very important issue. When testing your blood, an additional test of stored iron should be done. Stored iron is called ferritin. There are two issues here.

If ferritin is low and you don't have signs or symptoms of anemia yet, low ferritin can be an early warning signal that anemia is coming.
Secondly, ferritin can be high. Why would ferritin be high? Many pathogens (viruses and bacteria for example) love iron. They use iron in their processing to function and stay alive. If your body has these pathogens, you will take iron from the blood and instead of using it, place it in storage so the pathogens can't get to it.

In this situation a person may show low to moderate anemia and high ferritin. This happens with a very challenged immune system and the issue needs to be addressed.
So--keep oxygen levels up by making sure you have no anemia-even borderline and make sure ferritin levels are not too high because this can be a warning that your immune system needs help!

Do You Know this about your immune system? Part 1

One of the common things people know to take to help their immune system is vitamin D. Actually vitamin D is not a vitamin, rather it is a hormone. We are not going to go through all of its benefits because there are literally thousands of studies to prove its value. It is easy to take and not too expensive. And it has the advantage of not being needed to take daily. If you know your amount is 3000 units a day and you forget one day, you can take 6000 the next day; it is unique in that way.
Here are two things you may not know-

1. There are a variety of genetic changes that may affect your absorption of vitamin D. This is why some people take a lot of it and don't see their numbers go up. If you want to check into this, there are simple saliva tests to do.

2. When you get blood tests, you normally get tested for 25oh, which is the storage form or precursor to the active form. The active form is 1 25 oh. We like to test both. If you only test 25oh and it is low, one reason might be that your body is quickly changing the 25 to 1 25 because there is some type of inflammation going on in your body. We test both because we want to know what is happening actively in your body as well as the storage level. Some people may show low 25 storage, but this is only because they are over converting it to the active 125. This is essential to know and in this case, loading up on more vitamin d is not the way to go. This is done also with a simple blood test.

So that's vitamin (hormone) D. Knowing the full story is easy and can be very helpful!

The body is so amazing! There was an interesting article released via the NIH (National Institute of Health) that showed how the cells in the nose work together with the brain to prevent viral infections going up the nose into the brain. That is, there are guards in the nose , like gate keepers to keep the viruses from creating serious issues in our brain. This is so timely, because as we know, and I have a number of patients who report this, that the sense of smell seems to be a "side effect" of the Covid-19 virus. Whenever there is a symptom, one of my thoughts is always, hey, the body is working hard and maybe the symptom is teaching us something. Almost like the light on the car dashboard.
Maybe the cells in the nose, fought the fight, and are now depleted and need time to recover to regain their other main job-the ability to smell. And maybe, people with a decreased sense of smell had a harder time protecting their brain due to nose cells already weakened.
Here is a simple test for you---Hold a strong spice, like garlic to your right nostril and cover your left with your hand. Just on the right, do you smell it. Now reverse and smell on the left. Do both sides smell equally strong? If not, you need some strengthening to correct this, both for your sense of smell and your immune system.
Have a great day!

Hello to my Facebook Friends!

I went outside this morning and felt the wonderful rain falling. I heard the birds singing in the background. I saw two daffodils opening to bloom in my front yard. In my backyard two rabbits are back as spring approaches. It has been and continues to be a wondrous world.
We may be restricted on where we can go but we don't have to be restricted on what we think or pay attention to. How many more news shows do we really need to listen to?
As always we should take care of ourselves physically and we should not be running and hiding mentally. Let's embrace the beauty around us and be thankful for all we have.
Enjoy a beautiful day.
