The body is so amazing! There was an interesting article released via the NIH (National Institute of Health) that showed how the cells in the nose work together with the brain to prevent viral infections going up the nose into the brain. That is, there are guards in the nose , like gate keepers to keep the viruses from creating serious issues in our brain. This is so timely, because as we know, and I have a number of patients who report this, that the sense of smell seems to be a "side effect" of the Covid-19 virus. Whenever there is a symptom, one of my thoughts is always, hey, the body is working hard and maybe the symptom is teaching us something. Almost like the light on the car dashboard.
Maybe the cells in the nose, fought the fight, and are now depleted and need time to recover to regain their other main job-the ability to smell. And maybe, people with a decreased sense of smell had a harder time protecting their brain due to nose cells already weakened.
Here is a simple test for you---Hold a strong spice, like garlic to your right nostril and cover your left with your hand. Just on the right, do you smell it. Now reverse and smell on the left. Do both sides smell equally strong? If not, you need some strengthening to correct this, both for your sense of smell and your immune system.
Have a great day!
