…but it doesn’t mean to be!
✨First, shoutout to the little birdie that left this in my office 🫶🏾✨
Now let’s get into it. Anxiety can definitely override your self-talk and have us considering the most irrational thoughts. However, it really just trying to do its job and protect you. Sometimes, it just gets a little carried away (I mean, y’all have seen “Inside Out 2” by now, right?)
You don’t want an alert system that goes off when the wind blows or goes off at 4:30 am (tea, shade) but you DO want to have an alert system. So how do we navigate something that feels untrustworthy and unpredictable but doesn’t seem to be going anywhere?
1. And I’ll hold your hand when I say this, we are talking about anxiety not people so don’t use thus to rationalize keeping that red flag around bookie. That’s not what I said ☺️💕
2. Listen, but don’t obey: Anxiety is bringing your attention to something; but possibly not what it seems at the surface. Take a second to breathe, assess the situation, and neutralize any actual threats.
3. Body is key: when it’s hard to control the thoughts, start in the body. When you are able to relax the body, your mind will follow. Using breathing techniques, engaging the senses, and incorporating progressive muscle relaxation are just a few accessible ways to target your nervous system directly.
4. Give anxiety a job: speaking of the nervous system, anxiety is an example of our nervous system turning up too much. In our body, it feels fast, hot, and overwhelming because it generates a lot of energy. You can redirect and release that energy into something creative, fun, or practical.
5. Be kind to yourself: Anxiety shows up because you care. Even though it doesn’t feel like it in the moment, it wants you to be happy, safe, and at peace sooo bad that it’s disrupting all that. In a way, it’s a distortion of self-love. And within any distortion, we can seek truth to turn the belief into something more accurate and helpful.
What do you think about anxiety?
