Today we wore blue for

This year's theme is

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy is the second leading cause of infant mortality and lifelong disability, worldwide, impacting 2-30 per 1,000 live births.

🔹HIE has a wide range of outcomes.
🔹HIE can be caused before, during and after birth. Placental abruption or other placental issues, uterine rupture, fetal-maternal hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, cord compression and cord issues, maternal infections like COVID, mismanaged birth, near SIDS, and cardiac arrest are just a few causes.
🔹HIE is the leading cause of neonatal seizures, but can cause other conditions. Cerebral palsy, epilepsy, vision and hearing loss, speech delays, learning and attention issues, feeding issues, and global delays and disabilities are just a few of those conditions.
🔹Babies and children who experience HIE are typically very, very sick at the time of injury, or very soon after. Many need various forms of life support to stabilize them.
🔹Treatments specific to HIE are currently limited to therapeutic hypothermia.

This year's theme focuses on the many ways families choose to hold onto hope and turn it into something powerful, fueling advocacy, inspiring research, and strengthening community.

Infant dyschezia common in healthy infants under the age of 6 months. It is a muscle coordination problem. These infants will cry/strain for about 10-30 minutes before they are able to pass stool. They appear to have difficulty p**ping, but in reality they have no signs of constipation.

These episodes can be anxiety-provoking and exhausting for parents. It can occur several times a day.

Keep in mind -- Pooping is a learned reflex that requires time and patience. Infants need to learn how to relax their pelvic floor and increase intra-abdominal pressure by bearing down. Crying helps produce necessary abdominal pressure that's required to p**p.

As long as the infant's examination and growth is normal, no treatment is necessary or recommended. Suppositories and re**al stimulation interfere with the infants ability to learn how to stool therefore it is not recommended.
