I thought the sweet cherry blossoms would be the highlight of today's walk-through backyard. I was wrong.

THE FIG LIVES!

It's a Chicago Hardy that dies back each winter. 2 winters ago, I found a video showing how to over winter it so the branches would survive. I found this video after we had a frost, so it was too late. Last winter, I weighted the branches down with bricks and piled a ton of leaves and mulch over them. On my first walk through of the season, I found a bunch of the branches unburied. I had zero hope that this had worked. Today, I unburied it, and there were still branches buried, and they're alive and breaking dormancy!

Our growing season (newly 6A) is too short to both grow branches and fruit, so saving the branches might just mean that we get figs this year! 🤞🤞🤞

Trout lily!
I planted three last year, and they all got disturbed multiple times by critters. I had no hope that any survived.

May apples waking up! I need to track these things on a calendar so I know not to worry. I really thought nothing I planted last year was coming back.

Anise hyssop making an appearance. I am now making walkthroughs when it's not raining and wishing all the native plants back.
I'm not very patient.

Signs of spring! The fruit trees and berry bushes are waking up. No sign of a single spring ephemeral yet. This is a moon glow pear. Will we have pears this year? That is the million dollar question.

We have one lone crocus in the yard that the previous owner planted. It was at the base of a now long-gone oak. I went searching for signs of some native spring ephemerals, but they are still hibernating.

Is it strawberry season yet?
I'm over winter. This week, we are above freezing, so I thought a walkthrough was in order. Not much to see because everything is dormant. The peach will need a little winter pruning. The fig was properly overwintered (bent and weighted to the ground and covered in a foot on mulch) for the first time, but the critters still found it. In the fall, I'll try again and cage the whole thing. There will be no figs this summer. Again.
Those little strawberry leaves, though. They're giving me hope.
