❗Low back pain isn’t just “tightness” or something you should push through. It is often the low back working overtime to compensate for something else.

The low back (lumbar spine) works closely with the core, hips, and pelvis to create stability and transfer force during movement.

𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:
🦴 Lumbar spine (vertebrae & discs) – handle load and movement
🦴 Paraspinal muscles – provide support and control
🦴 Core musculature (deep stabilizers) – maintain spinal stability
🦴 Hips & pelvis – help distribute force during movement

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀, 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻:
👉 transferring force between the upper and lower body
👉 stabilizing during sprinting and cutting
👉 controlling rotation and extension

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁:
📝 Tightness or stiffness in the low back
📝 Pain with running, lifting, or prolonged positions
📝 Discomfort with rotation or extension
📝 Pain that comes and goes with activity
📝 A feeling of the back “locking up” or fatiguing quickly

🌟 At Fick PT & Performance, we go beyond just identifying where you feel pain—we analyze how your body is moving, handling load, and coordinating as a system. By identifying the true source of the issue, we’re able to build a targeted plan that addresses the root cause—not just the symptoms.

This week, we went over what the hamstrings do and why they become tight or injured.

❗𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁—h𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝘅 𝗶𝘁.

👉Hamstrings are one of the most commonly re-injured areas in sport. Not because athletes don’t rest, but because they’re not properly prepared for the speed, load, and demands of their sport.

🌟 That’s why it’s critical to work with a PT who understands not just the injury, but the performance demands placed on the hamstrings. At Fick PT & Performance, we don’t just rehab symptoms—we rebuild capacity.

📝 We start by identifying the root cause through movement assessments and performance testing, so we know exactly what your body is missing.

𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲, 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱:
✅ Restore muscle activation with ARPwave so the right muscles are doing the work
✅ Build strength and capacity using Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) when appropriate
✅ Reduce pain and support tissue recovery with Laser Therapy
✅ Develop individualized strength programs focused on eccentric control and sprint readiness
✅ Progress you through return-to-sport drills that match the demands of your sport
✅ Help you rebuild confidence so you can run and cut without hesitation

❗We don’t guess when you’re ready—we train it and progress it. That’s the difference.

📍If hamstring tightness or injury keeps coming back, it’s time for a plan built around performance. Book an assessment at Fick PT & Performance today!

04/22/2026

We broke down the anatomy of the hamstrings and why they’re so important for speed, power, and control. Now we can learn why those same muscles start to feel tight or injured. If your hamstrings constantly feel tight or you’ve dealt with recurring strains, it’s usually not just a flexibility issue. It’s a sign that something in the system isn’t working efficiently.

𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
The glutes are the primary drivers of hip extension and power. When they’re not contributing effectively, the hamstrings take on more load during sprinting and acceleration, leading to overuse, fatigue, and that constant feeling of tightness.

𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵
The hamstrings must control the leg as it rapidly lengthens during sprinting—this is called eccentric loading. If this strength isn’t developed, the hamstrings are more vulnerable during high-speed running, especially in the late swing phase where most strains occur.

𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹
The ability to control the pelvis and trunk directly impacts hamstring function. Excessive anterior pelvic tilt or poor core control can place the hamstrings in a lengthened, disadvantaged position, forcing them to work harder during movement.

𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀
Sudden increases in sprinting, practice intensity, or overall volume can exceed what the hamstrings are prepared for. Without proper progression, this leads to tissue overload and irritation.

𝗔𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀
Differences in strength, control, or flexibility between legs can cause one hamstring to take on more load over time. This imbalance often leads to recurring tightness or repeated injury on the same side.

𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗚𝗮𝗽𝘀
Not enough exposure to high-speed running can leave the hamstrings unprepared for game demands.

At Fick PT & Performance, we identify exactly which of these factors are contributing to your symptoms so we can address the root cause, not just the feeling of tightness.

Hamstring pain and tightness are among the most common issues athletes experience, especially in sports that demand speed, sprinting, and rapid changes of direction.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗺𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀:
🦵Biceps Femoris
🦵Semitendinosus
🦵Semimembranosus

These muscles play a critical role in how athletes move, produce force, and control speed:

𝗛𝗶𝗽 𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 - Driving the leg backward during sprinting to generate power and speed.

𝗞𝗻𝗲𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗼𝗻 - Bending the knee during running and helping control the lower leg.

𝗘𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - One of their most important roles—slowing the leg down at high speeds as it swings forward during sprinting. This is where the hamstrings are placed under the highest stress.

𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗲𝗿 & 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 - Helping transfer force between the hip and knee while stabilizing the leg during cutting, sprinting, and change of direction.

❗Because of these demands, the hamstrings are heavily loaded in sports like soccer, lacrosse, and running—especially during high-speed efforts.

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁:
👉Tightness that keeps coming back
👉Pain with sprinting or accelerating
👉Discomfort when lengthening the stride
👉Pulling or sharp pain during high-speed efforts
👉Lingering soreness that doesn’t fully go away

🌟 What many athletes call “tightness” is often the hamstring working overtime or compensating for something else. And when that continues without being addressed, it can progress to a strain.

At Fick PT & Performance, we go beyond where it hurts by analyzing how your body produces, absorbs, and controls force—specifically assessing hamstring function under real performance demands—so we can identify deficits and build a targeted plan that actually fixes the problem.

𝗔𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻.

👉 This week, we broke down the structures involved in hip pain and the real reasons it develops. The final step is addressing it the right way.

❗At Fick PT & Performance, we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. We don’t just give you a sheet of exercises and hope it works.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂.

That starts with understanding how your body moves under real demands—like the cutting, deceleration, and change of direction shown above.

From there, we address the root cause:

✅ Restore proper muscle activation with tools like ARPwave
✅ Build strength and capacity using Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) when appropriate
✅ Reduce pain and support tissue healing with Laser Therapy
✅ Develop an individualized strength and movement plan based on your deficits
✅ Progress you through return-to-sport drills that match the demands of your game
✅ Help you rebuild confidence so you can move and compete without hesitation

🏃 We also use objective performance testing (VALD technology) to identify asymmetries, measure progress, and ensure you’re truly ready to return to sport—not just feeling better.

Because getting out of pain is one thing. Staying out of pain while performing at a high level is another.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

At Fick PT & Performance, your rehab shouldn’t be generic—and it won’t be.

04/15/2026

❗Hip pain/tightness rarely comes down to just “tight muscles.” It’s usually the result of specific strength, movement, and load patterns that place repeated stress on the hip over time. Here are the most common factors:

𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗚𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵
The glutes are a primary driver of power, stability, and control. When they’re not doing their job, other muscles—like the hip flexors or adductors—have to compensate. This can lead to tightness, fatigue, and increased stress around the hip joint.

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗽 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗼𝗿𝘀
In running and field sports, the hip flexors are constantly active. When they become overused—especially in the presence of poor glute activation or core control—they often feel “tight,” but the real issue is overloading, not just flexibility.

𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗰 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹
The ability to control the pelvis and trunk during movement is critical. Without it, the hip joint is placed under increased stress during sprinting, cutting, and single-leg movements, leading to inefficient mechanics and irritation over time.

𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝗽 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆
Restrictions in hip rotation or extension can alter movement patterns. When the hip can’t move through the range it needs, the body compensates often increasing strain on surrounding tissues and the joint itself.

𝗔𝗱𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 (𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗻) 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱
The adductors play a key role in stabilizing and controlling movement, especially during cutting and change of direction. When they lack strength or are overworked, they can become a common source of hip and groin pain.

𝗟𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗧𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘀
Just like any other area, the hip has a capacity. Sudden increases in running volume, sprint work, or practice intensity can exceed what the tissues are prepared for.

These patterns aren’t random—they’re predictable, measurable and more importantly, fixable.

📍At Fick PT & Performance, we assess how your body is moving, producing force, and handling load to identify exactly what’s driving your hip pain—then build a plan tailored to your sport and demands.

🏃Hip pain is a frequent concern in athletes, particularly in sports such as lacrosse and soccer, as well as in running populations.

In many cases, symptoms develop when specific hip structures are exposed to loads that exceed their current capacity, often influenced by movement mechanics and force distribution. This is especially important in sport performance, as the hip plays a critical role in force production, speed, stabilit

𝘊𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘰𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘥𝘦:

✅ 𝗛𝗶𝗽 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗼𝗿𝘀 (𝗜𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗼𝗮𝘀 & 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘀)
Frequently overloaded with sprinting, cutting, and high-volume running. Often feel “tight,” but the issue is usually overuse or poor load distribution, not just lack of flexibility.

✅ 𝗔𝗱𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 (𝗚𝗿𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀)
Play a major role in cutting, deceleration, and change of direction. Weakness or fatigue here can lead to groin pain, decreased stability, and reduced ability to change direction efficiently.

✅ 𝗚𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲𝘀 (𝗚𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗱/𝗠𝗮𝘅)
Critical for pelvic control and force production. When underactive or weak, other structures compensate—leading to hip tightness, decreased power output, and increased stress on the knee and low back.

✅ 𝗛𝗶𝗽 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 (𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗿𝘂𝗺 & 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘂𝗹𝗲)
Repetitive loading, especially with limited mobility or poor mechanics, can stress the joint—leading to pinching, stiffness, or deep hip discomfort that can limit stride and performance.

✅ 𝗗𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗛𝗶𝗽 𝗥𝗼𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀
Responsible for controlling rotation and stability. Deficits here can reduce movement efficiency and lead to compensations during high-speed or cutting movements.

Additionally, if the hip isn’t functioning well, it can often lead to issues not just at the hip, but down the chain at the knee or up into the low back. That’s why simply stretching what feels tight doesn’t fix the problem.

📍At Fick PT & Performance, we assess how these structures are functioning together—so we can identify what’s actually driving your symptoms and build a plan that supports both recovery and performance.

💥On this episode of the PT Rebels Podcast, Dr. Gina delivers a clear message: not all physical therapists or clinics are created equal. For serious athletes, parents, and coaches, choosing the right provider can directly impact diagnosis, treatment, performance, and a safe return to sport.

🧱Dr. Fick shares how she built her practice around highly individualized care rather than a one-size-fits-all approach and explains why advanced training and deep clinical experience sharpen pattern recognition, decision-making, and outcomes.

📍With 27 years of experience, she combines expert insight with hands-on problem-solving tailored to every individual. She also cautions against self-diagnosing or requesting treatments like shockwave or laser based on AI, friends, or social media without a proper evaluation. And for families navigating the sports performance world, she offers an important warning about being pushed into in-house PT models that may not prioritize the right diagnosis or best care.

📍The best athletes deserve the best care—and that means working with physical therapists who are true experts in their field.

❗Fixing knee pain isn’t about one exercise; it’s about the right plan.

At Fick PT & Performance, we take a comprehensive approach to address both symptoms and the root cause of knee pain.

👉 First, we identify the deficits using objective testing like VALD force plates to assess strength, symmetry, and how your body produces and absorbs force.

📝 From there, we build an individualized plan to address what your body is missing.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘄𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝘂𝘀𝗲:
✔️ ARPwave Therapy to restore proper muscle activation and improve movement patterns
✔️ Shockwave Therapy to support tissue healing and reduce irritation

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝘄𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲:
✔️ Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) to build strength with less stress on the joints while improving muscle capacity

🌟 And most importantly, we develop a targeted strength and movement program designed specifically for you—focused on improving control, building load tolerance, and preparing your body for the demands of your sport.

Because knee pain isn’t just about calming symptoms—it’s about making sure it doesn’t come back.

At Fick PT & Performance, your recovery shouldn’t rely on guesswork—and it won’t.

📍If knee pain is limiting your performance, let’s build a plan that keeps you moving forward. Book an assessment today!

👉 Knee pain typically isn’t random. It’s often times the result of how your body handles load.

For athletes, knee pain usually comes from a few key factors:

‼️ 𝙒𝙚𝙖𝙠 𝙃𝙞𝙥 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙩𝙝
When the hips can’t control and stabilize movement, the knee takes on more stress—especially during running, cutting, and single-leg movements.

‼️ 𝙋𝙤𝙤𝙧 𝙇𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 & 𝘿𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙈𝙚𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙨
If you can’t properly absorb and control force when you land, stop, or suddenly change direction, that force gets transferred directly to the knee. This often happens when athletes lack strength and/or neuromuscular control at the spine, hips, knees, or ankles/feet, leading to things like dynamic knee valgus where the knee collapses inward, resulting in stiff landings or poor load absorption.

‼️ 𝙇𝙤𝙖𝙙 𝙏𝙤𝙡𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝘿𝙚𝙛𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙨
A sudden increase in training volume, intensity, or frequency can exceed what your tissues are prepared for—leading to irritation and pain.

‼️ 𝙇𝙞𝙢𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙈𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮
Restrictions at the ankle or hip can alter how your body moves, forcing the knee to compensate during running, squatting, and cutting movements. When proper range of motion isn’t available, stress is redistributed to the knee, increasing strain over time and raising the risk of irritation or injury.

‼️ 𝘼𝙨𝙮𝙢𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝘽𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙎𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙨
Differences in strength and neuromuscular control between legs can cause one side to consistently take on more load during running, cutting, and jumping. Over time, this imbalance places repeated stress on the same structures, increasing the likelihood of knee pain.

💪 At Fick PT & Performance, we go beyond just treating symptoms. We use detailed movement assessments and performance-based testing to identify exactly what’s driving your knee pain, then build a plan tailored to your sport and demands.

👉 If you’re serious about staying on the field, you need more than rest—you need a plan built around how your body moves and performs.

📍If knee pain keeps showing up, it shouldn’t be ignored and at Fick PT & Performance, it won’t be. Book an assessment with us today!
