🚨 Proposed Federal Loan Changes Threaten AP Workforce 🚨
The U.S. Department of Education may narrow the definition of “professional degree programs,” cutting off federal loan access for NPs, PAs, CNSs, and other advanced practitioners.
This could shrink the oncology workforce while cancer cases are rising.

Bibi Mohamed’s journey into oncology began unexpectedly during her sophomore year of nursing school. Growing up with relatives impacted by leukemia and breast cancer, Bibi understood the silence and fear that often surrounded cancer.

As an inpatient oncology nurse practitioner, Bibi finds that small moments of teamwork and connection give her work meaning. She thrives on helping patients and families understand procedures and medications, breaking down complex information into something manageable and meaningful.

Bibi joined APSHO six months ago and through APSHO she hopes to elevate the voice of advanced practice providers, ensuring they are valued and included in key conversations in health care.
Looking ahead, Bibi is energized by emerging trends in oncology, particularly in multiple myeloma. She is an exceptional oncology provider and a valued member of the APSHO community.

🚨 APSHO Raises Alarm on Proposed Federal Loan Restrictions 🚨
The U.S. Department of Education is considering narrowing the definition of “professional degree programs,” which could limit student-loan access for NPs, PAs, CNSs, and other advanced practitioners.
This change threatens the oncology workforce at a time when cancer cases are rising. It would create barriers for students—especially those from rural and underrepresented communities—who rely on federal loans to pursue advanced practice education.
APSHO urges federal leaders to:
✅ Recognize NP, PA, and CNS programs as essential professional degrees
✅ Preserve financial aid for advanced practice students
✅ Assess workforce impact before policy changes
✅ Engage oncology societies in decision-making
✅ Protect diversity and rural access pathways
Restricting education access = restricting cancer care. APSHO stands committed to advocating for policies that sustain the oncology workforce and ensure equitable care for all patients.
